I've been looking around for an electric lawnmower to replace my trusty ICE which I've just donated to the tenants for a rental property - hence have read through this thread. Was also in Bunnings at the weekend and they had this model as a promotion:

https://ozito.com.au/products/pxc-2-x-18v-brushless-steel-deck-lawn-mower-kit/

It's not listed on their website so I imagine it's just a short promotion.

Seems to get good reviews on the Bunnings Oz website though - anyone got any thoughts on how it might go in NZ? Steel deck and 36V  -seems like it could do the trick.

Thanks in advance.

I have the plastic 2 battery non brushless version.

Based I my experience with that one, this looks like a good buy. Only comment would be, is the steel deck worth the extra weight?

Yeh good question. They didn't have any on display when I saw them on Saturday. I might see if they can take one out of the box and feel how heavy it is when I go next time.

Do you want to mulch? I gave up on grass catchers because they eat up so much time and remove the nutrients from the lawn. Mulching recycles the cut grass back into the lawn. Over time it makes a big difference.

I have an EGO 47" 56v mower I got in September '17. I've replaced the blade once ($49) and bought two additional batteries. I mow half an acre.

Idly speculating on the 36V Brushless Ryobi lawnmower.

Is there and actual difference between the 4Ah model and the 5Ah model - I mean is it just the battery, the actual mower is the same.

Also see Bunnings don't actually sell 5Ah batteries, only 4 and 6, I guess I can use either if I want too ?

Plot is supposed to be about 1000m2, but minus the house and the drive and a bit of decking and bit of jungle/forest at the back, maybe half that for lawn.

The pictures show a different colour scheme between the two models, and it lists the cutting heights as different 18mm-65mm vs 20mm-70mm. One might be a newer revision.

The difference in Ah is just how much runtime you'll get (assuming the battery will physically fit). But note that the 6.0Ah (and greater) batteries are the HP (high power) versions which cost proportionally more and those mowers may not get any additional benefit from them since the mower itself isn't denoted as HP.

Interesting, thanks. those differences were far too subtle for me to spot...

Couldn't get the petrol mower to work today. Might try to get it fixed, might get a new petrol one, might get a lectric one. Life would probably be simpler if the internet didn't exist - for every review I read about how well something cuts the grass, I read about how the battery lasts 10 minutes, the grass catcher needs emptying when its 2% full, some awesome new petrol engine that never needs its oil changing doesn't last 10 minutes past its guarantee, etc etc, arrrrgh

Get a can of engine start spray for the petrol mower, Best thing I ever got. One spray and it starts right up even when left for ages. Then it will suck all the crap out of the carb and keep on running till its dragged new fuel thru.

Im keeping mine alive till I see what comes out next for electric mowing stuff.

I like the name of this one https://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/p/nulon-nulon-start-ya-bastard-150g/13169.html

But have not used it. I have a boring named can of the CRC stuff. Think it was a bunnings or miter10 purchase.

Nice to see a few things have escaped the PC police (not of course that I would have a problem with such a concept obviously...)

Would be nice to just get a new mower, this ones lasted about 14 years, but as soon as I find a candidate, its not in stock anywhere anyway.

I got the *scrolls back a couple of pages* 5Ah one a year ago this week.  The petrol mower took about an hour to do my section (800m2 less house and garage) and if the grass is dry and relatively short, the 5Ah battery could manage that.  If it is slightly wet or thick and green then I had to recharge at about 75% complete.  I picked up the 6Ah battery a few months ago and that deals with my lawn with about 1 bar to spare.

Cons:

  • The catcher is rubbish if the grass is even remotely damp.  Just clogs the outlet.  I rarely use it though as the mulching plug is effective.
  • Wet grass will clog up underneath fairly quickly also.  I carry a plastic trowel with me and scoop it out when it bogs it down and chuck that lumpy mulch on the gardens.

Aside from that, it hasn't missed a beat.  Cuts well.  Is quiet to use and light to pick up.

Still going round in circles - fix the one we've got, get a new petrol one, get an electric one.

Saw comments about clogging the outlet with the Ryobi 5Ah but also the Ryobi with the Yamaha engine I fancied as well. Have moved on to Lawnmaster petrol for now, till I circle back to, erm, who knows what.

But I know i don't like mowing so I'll probably be doing that once a fortnight, which points to petrol again. I give up.

Mulching isn't a good long term option in some climates/time of year/parts of New Zealand. The mulched grass doesn't always break down and decompose, it just forms a thatch which ends up having to be raked up with great effort.

As far as using a catcher goes, when the grass is lush or wet use plenty of power/RPM. This imparts enough energy to throw the heavy lush or damp grass to the back of the catcher. That way you get the catcher nice and full.

Don't seem to have had that issue over the past year but will keep an eye on it.

"use plenty of power/rpm" is great advice if you have an option other than on/off.  I've never had any mower with throttle control, they've all been either completely off or run at whatever rpm they are set at from factory.

The Ryobi has two settings by the sounds of it.  Normal and "drain the battery faster".   :-P
However, it self controls that by figuring out if it's under more load and ramps up the power.  Doesn't make any difference to clogging the catcher chute though.  I think it's just a design thing combined with wet grass that doesn't work well.  Works acceptably when the grass is dry though, so that's when I'll pick to top up the garden mulch levels.

I think I'm going around this loop at the moment. Did you get anywhere @rb99??

I should have got the Ozito one I was looking at pre-xmas (scroll to my earlier post), but didn't and they've sold out. Now every electric mower I look at has all sorts of plusses and minuses and nothing that looks ideal.
