Dynamix cabinets are great and would be my pick. They do right up to a 47U and usually come with a couple of shelves, have adjustable rails etc. Usually a lot cheaper than the top brand ones.

lyonrouge: The panels on mine are decorative only and provide no structural support, however, I suspect you'll end up with a lot of empty (wasted?) space at they back as they are very deep.

Edit: I've added a photo for reference. When I got mine I measured it out on the floor and it all seemed quite sensible, but it was only when I got the thing home that I realise the actual size.

Ummm, side panels prevent rodent/debris from getting in and control the airflow if your decide to setup blanking panels that enforce front-to-back cooling, as well as reducing dust blowing through more than necessary. Not just decorative but quite essential outside of a data centre environment. BTW its not uncommon to have cable entry holes not blocked up — allowing mice to make their little home on top of your nice warm network switch.

Having insufficient space behind the cabinet does make access difficult and prevents you screwing anything into the rear mounting posts. Note that most rackmount equipment (especially UPS and rackmount servers) have things at the back that are seriously designed for rear access to mount the equipment rails or maintain cabling.

Time to find a new industry!

the rack will only have a 24 way patch panel, a switch, a router ,the HTPC audio AMP, one (maybe 2) PC's and maybe a U.P.S..oh and a spare atx P/S to power my ELV stuff. cooling wont be an issue . but it MUST be tucked in the corner or the room i'm not going to make a generally unused/un-accessed cabinet a feature of the room with dead space around it.

Home theater stuff often goes in a rack where the whole thing pulls out and swivels for access to the rear of the gear.

Is that an option?

i took the mounting bars off a server rack, and screwed them to 100x50 in a cupboard

hard to access some of the connections on the back but im not doing that often

I think I've just claimed a half a hall cupboard out of our forthcoming build (WAF 4?) :)

CDL sell the Mounting bars by themselves which you can use in similar fashion to install in a cupboard somewhere. There is a client site I used to have where they added a side door on the cupboard as well so you could access from the side the rear of the servers that are rack-mounted in the cupboard and had a fan up the top into the ceiling for ventilation.

Can you put it on casters? that way you can roll it out for maintenance and roll it back when done.
Edit: what's behind the back wall, may you can implement a rear entrance panel?

the back wall is the main house entranceway and the adjoining wall is the kitchen so no chance of through wall entry. (waf factor -10)

Can't just relocate the red drawers next to it then?

That would give side access, maybe just those drawers on castors even?
