planning a new house build and i have made room in the corner of the workshop for a media cupbard to house the main HTPC/server, router, freeview star point,U.P.S etc etc. and was looking at maybe a big old 42U server rack.

it will be in the corner so will need access from one side as well as the front, i know most have front/rear access but in general can you remove the side panel also??

generally you can remove all the panels (check model), or just buy one without panels.

Yea almost all you can remove the side panels. You may find one cheaper without them actually.

ah cool. it needs to have the sides on it as it will be in my garage/workshop but it would be easier to get to the back of the stereo amp etc if i could take it off and get to the wiring from the side. will have a IR blsater on the front.

You can take the side off, but access may not be that great depending on what vertical rails you have in it for shelving.

The side provides bracing however, the server rack I have under the stairs here is pretty wobbly with the sides off it.

The panels on mine are decorative only and provide no structural support, however, I suspect you'll end up with a lot of empty (wasted?) space at they back as they are very deep.

Edit: I've added a photo for reference. When I got mine I measured it out on the floor and it all seemed quite sensible, but it was only when I got the thing home that I realise the actual size.

I recommend looking for one like mine, with easy to remove sides rather than bolted on panels.

APC AR3100 is what you want, fully adjustable rails etc and the sides have lockable latches for easy removal. Doors can also be pulled off very easily out of their hinges (when open)

haha my garage is a WAF free zone.

when we planned the house i drew the garage on the section with the drive the way i wanted it and said "there you go. the rest is up to you..

i have full design and operational control of tehh garage and the lounge. teh rest i dont care.
