gzt: How much RF stuff do you have in that cabinet/closet

Just your bulk standard Wireless Router.

RUKI: My two cents:
- Have electrician tested inside distribution board where your earth is connected to neutral? Checked loose contacts, etc? If they only looked outside the house - earth may well be in good condition outside, but they also need to check inside (FYI - if you own the house - read electrical code of what you can do - many things are allowed to the house owner).
- Does your power bill look abnormally big? (>$120Ave) There were two reports from my friends who experienced above average power bill at their premises (e.g. up to $600/month) - service company followed by testing and revealed some [earthing] issues;

I believe so, the power bill is on-average $250 per month.

Going to do some more testing over the weekend and see if I can find the issue.

I have no idea, but it's worthwhile trying with the router off. You could also try switching off all other circuits (but one obviously) in the house using the fuse box. It is possible the fault is isolated to a single circuit or appliance.

Power quality testing from your provider is usually free btw.

Does the problem occur if you are not using an ethernet connection?

Hmm, what to write...

The tiny spark when earthed is interesting. This could happen if your main neutral is a bit dodgy and your MEN link is also dodgy... but any sparky would have found that. Perhaps the bit he "improved" was the MEN link and the sparks no longer happen? If this is case the next thing is the main neutral connection followed by checking for harmonics as others have pointed out.

Certainly  power monitoring by the lines company will pick this up. Tell them your toaster won't brown bread...

Wow so I found what the issue was and feel so silly.

Turns out there was a master filter installed and patched into an incorrectly marked port of the patch panel - this has a disconnected phone line sound on it as well as VDSL at a sync rate of 67mbit down, 10mbit up (sorry TimA).

With this plugged into my trusty 24pt switch I guess it was leaking into the household wiring (and Ethernet) causing the weird issues.

Due to the cabinet being just 25m from the house I guess the power was quite strong hence why the leakage went to the whole house. High frequency stuff - explains the touchpad issues.

Lesson learned and I feel so silly in the process. Cheers for all your help guys!

Was this something you discovered yourself ?

It was indeed - I went through literally everything and found that with everything unplugged from the switch the problems didn't happen so checked each patch manually.

MacBook zapping people? Yeah, found out that is caused by the fact the power supply is not earthed with the cable my sister was using. The iPhone charger she was using also was a fake and ended up in the bin, sisters...

Weird that the sparky didn't find anything. If you were not in a position to track down this kond of thing yourself, and a professional sparky can't locate it, then where does a non-tech-able person turn to ?
