How do you find these memory foam pillows. The other half bought one and it gave her a major headache. Never figured out if it was something to do with the angle of her neck or the fact the it was (obviously) new and smelled (smelt ?) terrible.

An alternative for memory foam in pillows is latex - it provides the same key benefit as memory foam, in that it's far more supportive than the standard pillow. It also has a certain "perfume", but this goes after a while; I got one on the recommendation of my physio, and love it.

I've read that memory foam can be quite a heat retainer, which isn't necessarily ideal for many people for either pillows (I like a cool pillow!) or beds. We bought a new bed last year and I recall being told they often try to mitigate the heat problem of memory foam in beds by adding in additional components. I avoided a mattress with memory foam for this reason, but even then found our comparatively flash new mattress way warmer than our old one. In summer I'd sometimes check to see if the electric blanket had been accidentally switched on!

I've got some I bought and tried using - caused neck pains. I'd burn them if it wouldn't just make a metric tonne of black smoke.

We got one from Briscoes once. Wasn't that cheap and absolutely ruined me.

Recently got a new bed and skeptically got a Sleepyhead contoured memory foam pillow with it and it's HEAPS better.

Maybe there is something to be said for the pricier ones. Have you tried the Tempur ones?

There's a huge variety of memory foam pillows. The sleepyhead ones are very soft, too soft for me, just a rectangle. Peace Pillows are contoured and come in soft/medium (which feels soft to me) and medium/firm (first one was good, second one could be used to fill potholes). Then there other brands and generics, huge range of firmness, shape, etc. I've never seen shredded memory foam pillows.

timmmay: We have:
 - Egyptian cotton sheets from Briscoes (never pay more than 50% of full price). I think we have Domani Lusso brand.
 - Memory foam mattress (a brand not available any more)
 - Memory foam topper (they wear out) from Slumber Top.
 - I use a memory foam pillow, contoured. $50 from target furniture, on special.

Also, a heater in the room so we don't need huge heavy duvets.

Why would you put a memory foam topper on a memory foam mattress?

We have a Tempur mattress (can't remember which one from memory) on an solid slate base, and I use this Tempur pillow.

Tempur are expensive, but are very good. Although, memory foam is not for everyone and it has definitely softened up a bit up over the few years we've had it. Also, forget about having an electric blanket on them since they are heat activated. They also work best with as little between you and the mattress as possible (again so your body heat is as close to the mattress has possible)  - so no fluffy toppers either. We just have a VERY thin mattress protector and a cotton sheet on the mattress.

Why's this?

I'd have thought you'd want to put a barrier between you and the mattress to act as insulation against its heat-absorption properties and, in some situations, to soak up all the sweat produced as a result of over-heating!).

Got Memory foam pillows with a new bed. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Might give the pillows we got another go sometime, but considering how much some of them cost, don't think we'll be doing much experimenting...

Yup don't skimp on when it comes to buying a bed. I did a lot of research into ours before we purchased it a year ago. Ended up going with a Provence Ultra Plush Super King Bed by Crown Jewel.

Got a decent topper to go on it but apart from that the room has a panel heater in it so bedroom is always nice and cosy so only need very light duvet. No stupid electric blankets or anything.

Best nights sleep we have ever had since investing in one of these. Don't even notice the wife in bed.

We waited 8 months before it came on special and managed to get a 5k discount on purchasing it.

Because to conform best to your body, the more direct the heat transfer the better. Also the shape conforms best with as little additional material between yourself and the mattress. The mattress would probably stay firmware with a thicker mattress protector (if you like firm beds), but won't conform to your body nearly as well - which would kind of defeat the purpose of memory foam.

We initially tried it with a thicker mattress topper/protector that we already had, and then without and the difference in the feel of the mattress was huge. We now use a thin waterproof mattress protector to prevent sweat from soaking into the mattress, it's only about the thickness of a sheet (I was initially concerned that this would be like having a sheet of plastic under us, but you really can't tell it's there). Tempur even make their own ones (probably more expensive though).

The memory foam bed ended up being a little too firm, the topper makes it softer. The topper became really soft after 3-4 years so we replaced it.

The whole thing is due for replacement soon.
