Thanks for all the thought and suggestions folks.  I'll certainly post some better pictures with more details after I can get into the house next.

And I'm happy that a number of you have said that it looks like good work.  The builder who did the inspection said the rest of the house has been built very well, and to a high spec. so I'm hoping that (apart from the exterior needing repainting this summer) there will be nothing to do for a while but sit back and enjoy it - once I learn what this stuff does!

I'm maybe missing something obvious, but why not ask the Vendor - they presumably know what it does and who installed it, spec etc? Once the  contract is unconditional I'm sure they will be very happy to talk to you about - just get the agent to arrange it

That's the plan, but timing is proving difficult.  We've been unconditional since early last week but (as I said in the OP) the vendor is currently overseas and I'm heading overseas myself this Saturday.  I get back eight days later on the Sunday, start a new job on the Monday, and have to move out of my current house on the Friday, so will be busy decluttering, packing and cleaning that week.  The earliest chance I will get to connect with the vendors is in three weekends' time and by then they will also be in moving mode.  I was just trying to see if anyone on GZ had experience with this sort of thing and could recognise what that panel was for.

I thought I'd update this old post, now that we've been in the house for a few weeks...

It's a PDL e.BOS system, installed at the time the house was built just over a decade ago. Unfortunately the company that installed it went under and PDL don't support it themselves any more, but the previous owners left the manual created for the install that details everything (most of which I don't understand) and I through that have managed to find one of the original installers running another company in Lower Hutt - I haven't contacted them yet but will do in the near future, just to check whether we have support if we need it.

Most of it relates to lighting. There are certain areas (entry foyer, stairs, bathrooms, walk-in wardrobe) where there are occupancy sensors that will turn lights on automatically when they sense someone come into the room and leave them on for 60 seconds before turning them off again, but only during certain time periods (mostly seems to be around 7:30pm to 7:30am) and lights dim automatically in the "cinema room" (i.e. the lounge) in the evening for movie/TV watching (although this can be overridden by pressing the switch if you want to do something else, e.g read a book).  There are also some additional features in some rooms, like pressing a button quickly will turn lights on low (or only turn on half the lights) and pressing and holding for a couple of seconds turns the lights on full.  There are also some power points timed through the system, e.g. heated towel rails that come on twice a day for two hours at a time.

There are a small number of things we haven't figured out yet: a couple of switches don't seem to do anything; one room with an occupancy sensor and a scene in the e.BOS system doesn't seem to turn lights on automatically; some outside lights don't come on when we think they should (but that might just be dead bulbs, which I should finally get around to checking out this weekend); a monitor that should have the ability to show and communicate with the person at the front door, and remotely open the door if you want to let them in, but the only function that seems to work is the door bell (and there is no manual for this door system). Unfortunately we still haven't connected with the previous owners in person. They keep saying they are going to come and visit us and talk us through some things but they haven't shown up yet - I have a feeling that if they ever do we'll probably have it all sussed by then.
