It can be difficult to get a high end finish with brush painting.

You need good brushes and good technique including knowing how much to thin the paint.

Spraying if you get your technique right is much easier.  While spray cans aren't cheap they are easy.  Just be aware that colours can vary slightly from one can to another.

SepticSceptic:

I tried looking for an on-line price for the Uracryl, and other "engineered paints" - why do they make something as simple as looking up a price so damned difficult ?

Had the same problem. It is apparently because it is for a professional to use who is supposed to have been thru some training.

Just like they dont sell real paints online etc, too hazardous to let muppets that don't wear the right PPE get hold of.

Crazy, as I can find pricing for Altex 321 Brushable polymer 2-part paint on-line in NZ easy enough. Which is one of the reasons why I chose Altex,, as finding pricing info on any other brand locally was difficult.

My wife just did this on our drawers over the weekend, wanted the "distressed white" finish.  The drawers were originally pretty much identical to yours.

They came out amazing.  I was well impressed, didn't think the old girl had it in her tongue-out

She used this recipe:

Mix 1/3 cup of plaster of Paris and 1/3 cup of cool water; stir until completely smooth. Mix that with 1 cup of latex paint and stir thoroughly. This will make enough chalk-finish paint for one coat on a six-drawer dresser. Chalk-finish paint should not be stored and reused. If you have a smaller project, mix smaller amounts of plaster, paint, and water in the same proportions.

As per this youtube video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShlHrIPAVCM

No primer was necessary. Plaster sets into the timber and hardens the paint.

Once they had dried, she polished them up with a product called "MaxWax"

Same price per litre (~$60-ish for a 1 litre retail from memory) as standard paint last time I checked - though this was a couple of years ago. Resene's pricing policy was generally to increase price based on the amount of tint required - in order of high-to-low pricing: weird colours (fluoro yellows) > brightest > darkest > midtones > lightest > whites, not the type of paint.

Thanks @chimera that's interesting. I think my wife wants a glossy modern finish, but I'll show her that :)
