We just went through this decision process ourselves. As a result, assembling this will be my weekend project.

Traditionally I'd get a cheaper BBQ from The Warehouse or Mitre 10. But they never seem to last more than a couple of years. My last one was bought two Christmases ago, and one of the burners has split. So, being sick of this false economy, I decided to spend a bit more.

Initially I was a little concerned about the size of the Weber. But reflecting on our actual usage patterns, I think it'll be plenty big enough.

They do like to sting you with the accessories though! We use our current BBQ for rotisseries a lot, so we wanted the Weber to do that too. And this was a $300 upgrade!

I'd also back up the advice of going to an official Weber specialist dealer stocking the whole range, rather than Mitre 10. For us, this meant seeing the Weber in Mitre 10 Northwest, scratching our heads as to why there was no temperature gauge, and then walking 50 metres to Palmers Planet next door, where they had the full range. The difference was that Mitre 10 was only selling the Weber Q 3100, whereas the model we got was the superior 3200. 

 


Fellow Webber Q owners, what do you use to clean it? Do you stump up for the $20 "official" Weber cleaner, or is there something far more cost effective that can be used?

I love my Weber One Touch Gold Charcoal Grill with Rotisserie, and also the 3200 I have at the bach. I also saw a nice looking Heston BBQ at the home show.

 

I'd be pretty sad if I couldn't have a charcoal grill at the house, though the attraction of Gas is nice too.

I am close to pulling the trigger and purchasing a Weber Family Q3200. Just working out the best way to pay for it actually. I think it was mentioned on a similar thread that the Webers never seem to go on sale - a sign of a quality product I'd say. I have a load of Airpoints and they're available from the Air NZ Airpoints store, but only the Q3100 model. Same with Flybuys. Looks like the only way to get the Q3200 is to part with cold hard c$sh.... unless anyone has any other ideas.

 

Spring weather is still rubbish in Auckland for bbqing so that's allowing me to delay!

I purchased the "official" cleaner first time, then a generic cleaner the second for less than half the cost.

 

Best tip I can give is to purchase the "official" Weber wire brush. Use with with a bowl of water on the grill plate immediately after each cook while the BBQ is still piping hot and and your grill plate remains in perfect condition with little effort.

I have a weber Q1200 for meals in a rush and a charcoal one touch gold for when I have more time / larger groups.

 

I just sold my 6 burner fancy pants thing as it wasn't getting used.

OK, as much as I'd like a Weber, for the size I'm after would be way too much.

 

So taking Weber out of the equation, has anyone got any recommendations on 4 burner BBQ's around the $500-$700 range?

We went through the same consideration of the Q3100 versus Q3200 a couple of Xmases ago, though were paying cash either way so the use of Airpoints didn't come into it.

 

You're right - no point waiting around for a sale, as they are both rare and stingy. Best you can do is ensure it's at a time they're doing a promo that throws in a useful (otherwise expensive) accessory - this is probably inevitable at Xmas time, when we got ours it came with a cover, which was an essential for us anyway.

 

Given the Q3100 will involve less "real" money for you, I guess the question is are the differences between the models make it worth the need to find the real money? My recollection is that these are the slightly higher lid and the built-in thermometer. I'm vegetarian so we don't even use it for meat (so probably don't need the extra height), but the thermometer is especially useful when cooking pizza (which these bbqs do brilliantly).  In the end we decided it wasn't a huge premium to get the 3200, given the initial cost was already fairly significant (plus we could get the 3200 in black!).

Yes, I bought the chimney starter. Pro Tip. Get a Tuna can, and fill it with meths, it burns clean and leaves no chemical flavour in the food. 

 

The Rotisserie is stupid expensive, but I couldn't live without it now. Buy some boneless lamb shoulders, say 2, and put salt, pepper, garlic, and rosemary inside, roll tightly, tie with twine and you'll have one of the best meals of your life. 

 

Christmas dinner, I usually do 1 x size 22 chicken in the BBQ and 1 in the Oven for a large family feed, and they are both awesome, but lightly smoked chicken is delicious. Don't overdo the smoke, one or two small pieces of wood is PLENTY. It's amazing.

It gets hot with the right coals and ive had some success with beef and lamb on it.

I typically judge a BBQ by the number of components it's made up of. Mine has two only. A big deep cast iron dish for the wood or charcoal and a grill that the meat goes on.

If it's just for the two of us and I want quick meal that would otherwise make too much mess inside then I use a cast iron pan on an otudoor gas cooker.

Wire brush and oven cleaner here, but we do Pizzas with pizza stone and that gets it very hot to the point of turning all the left over food to charcoal.

 

We have the Pizza stone and the roasting tray with the rack. The aluminium trays are actually cheaper to get Weber ones than cheaper ones from the $2 shop!

 

Last night I cooked some left over veges and a 300g sirloin on the Weber, it was delicious but we mainly do roasts.

We're going back to a brick based, grill on top, wood fired, self creation even though we have a gas one. Back to coals!

I've also been looking at BBQs recently. Webber certainly is the most recommended. Has anyone used a Ziegler & Brown BBQ? They look pretty similar to the Webbers, and at the moment they have a deal on the Twin Grill
