I was looking at the Masport MB4000 series but can't for the life of me find a single review for the damn thing. They're stocked at this place in Wellington that only sells Webers and some other brand which appears to be quite popular and expensive, so with that logic the Masport can't be half bad, right?

WeberQ FTW.

 

Honestly when you spend the money you won't regret it, we use ours for cooking 3-4 time a week, and over summer that will probably change to 5-6 times a week.

 

We have the FamilyQ and the MIL has the Q.

Don't do what we (I) did.  My eyes were bigger than my belly and I have ended up with this monster that we don't use, or only use a very small part of (out of 6 burners usually only need 1). Next to impossible to move around, and barely fits anywhere on the patio.  Looks amazing, but totally impractical.  I too have been eyeing up the Weber.     





Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Good topic, and really timely.

 

This friday I'm going to buy BBQ. 

 

I cannot decide between Weber Q 2000 and Broil King Porta-Chief 320. Both in mitre 10. 

 

Currently I lean towards Broil King because for extra $50 I get:

 

     

  1. Bigger area within same dimensions as Weber (because of it's square form)
  2. 3 burners
  3. Built-in warming rack
  4. Legs, so can be used as table (cart for weber cost $250)
  5. Built in thermometer
  6. Weber doesn't have heat disspation inserts between burners and grill, which might lead to uneven heat distribution (theoretically tho)
  7. 10 years warranty on case, 5 years on burners
  8. Standard gas cylinder connector, no need in special more expensive 4-5L cylinders

 

Any comments?

  5. Built in thermometer - This is the most important feature of the Q2200 and Q3200 pay the extra and get the higher lid and thermometer.
  6. Weber doesn't have heat disspation inserts between burners and grill, which might lead to uneven heat distribution (theoretically tho) - The way a weber is designed these are not needed.
  7. 10 years warranty on case, 5 years on burners - That's pretty good!
  8. Standard gas cylinder connector, no need in special more expensive 4-5L cylinders - The Weber has standard connection type.

Another +1 for Weber - I live a block from the beach and all my previous shiney stainless steel (yeah right!) BBQs turned into rust buckets within 12 months. The Weber is both corrosion resistant (being plastic) and looks good, and is compact enough to heat up quickly and cook beautifully. Highly recommend.

I've used couple of Weber gas units and very impressed.

 

We have a couple of Broil Kings.

 

One is the smallest model they do with a two zone burner and side burner.  We use it for camping.  I've cooked up to 20 people dinner off it.  Does a good job but takes little while to get used to. 

 

I think Weber make better portable units than Broil King but we wanted a side burner for camping so Broil King got the nod.

 

Our main BBQ is a double hood Broil King model (4 Burner and 2 burner hoods) with a side burner and rotisserie burner.  It's like two BBQs joined together. 

 

For a small crowd I can use the two burner hood, for a medium crowd the 4 burner hood, for a party I fire up the whole lot.  I have also cooked 4 large chickens on the rotor.

 

With the two hoods I can cook two foods that need a different cooking profile.

I need BBQ for family of 4, but occasionally doing BBQ for guests (prob no more then 8 ppl).

 

Don't know if 3 burners is important, I'm BBQ newbie, literally.
The idea is to put some wood chips smoker box on one burner and make it hotter, while other on less hot temperature for steak. Is this valid reason?
For me it was killer-feature of Broil King, and if it is not so improtant, then weber might be even better

 

About thermometer. I actually can get Weber Q2200 with higher lid and thermometer for the same price as Broil King 320. I will still need rack, but it can be bought separately.

 

What I like about weber is design, and exhaustive number of positive feedback. Wether it's here in NZ, or in Amazon and other sites. Broil kings have critics mostly about damaged parts during delivery, which indicates not very high quality of case.

 

Question about gas cylinder, in M10 I saw that it is different than on my gas cylinder. It is smaller and has outer threads, while my 9L cylinder needs inner thread. Is this a problem Do I need different cylinder, or there some adaptor in the package?

My Weber Q2200 was stolen last year, so I researched all options before replacement. Initially I wanted an all stainless steel multi burner beast, but eventually came back to the smaller form factor and the exact same choice as you - Weber Q versus Broil King. The main reason I initially favoured the Broil King was the three burners versus the single burner in the Weber. However, after extensive reading of reviews, the Broil King didn't seem to rate as well for reliability or longevity. Also, having a good look at the Broil King in the showroom, it had a lot more parts than the Weber and didn't seem as good quality as the Weber. I'd also had an excellent experience with my stolen Weber Q, so opted for another Weber Q.

 

Tip of the century: If you are looking at a Weber Q - don't buy from Mitre 10. Find out who the designated Weber supplier is for your area and, for an extra $50, get the Q2200 - which comes with a built in thermometer and deeper lid for cooking. It's worth the extra $50!

 

Food form the Weber is outstanding once you get used to cooking on it.

 

My replacement Weber Q is only 10 months old and the paint finish on the lid has started to blister and peel off. I have searched the web and cannot find any other examples of this, and my old Weber Q2200 did not suffer from any quality issues, so I assume this is a one-off problem. I've just lodged a warranty repair with the stockist, so will update this thread on how smoothly (or otherwise) the claim process goes with Weber.

I'm still a fan of the big old donk BBQ. I really can't see what all the fuss is about with the Weber, but everyone loves them, they must be good. 

I've got a 6 burner Beefeater at the moment - goes hard. We were without an oven for 3 weeks or so last year and this cooked everything with ease. Side burner is very handy too.
