I’ve just gone through the process of getting one installed for my mother, on a similar house with aluminum joinery.
First up, we discounted the ones sold by places like Bunnings as they are just so fugly - looks like a fish and chip shop security door! These can also be false economy as, you have found out, the standard sizes available don’t fit many doors. Plus the need to build a support structure to attach to aluminum door frames adds further to the cost.
So initially I started with a quote from a local store that sells the well-publicised brands like amplimesh, for over $1400! Another quote from a local company not attached to those brands did the whole thing for little over $700 for a one with stainless mesh (other quote had been for the midrange aluminum), and had ithe whole thing done inclsuding build and installation in two working days.
Personally, I’d have been happy to have paid the higher amount if it meant avoiding the ugly grills, but clearly there are also companies out there that can let you have your cake and eat it too - custom-built, color-matched, and with none of the hassles of do it yourself but also at a reasonable price.

Is your mother in Auckland, if so could you post details of the installer? $700 is cheaper than I have been able to find.
If the main door opens inwards could you mount the new frame on the outside hinged on the left and leave it hooked open until such time that you want to leave the main door open? That way doesn't matter about the main door handle....
