I had a look in Australia once and honestly don't see the appeal. It's a just a bigger version of Freedom IMO, cheap, flatpack crap that doesn't last.

I have numerous items of Ikea furniture; bookcases, entertainment units, shelves, kids furniture purchased in the UK late nineties.  They have survived three house moves in the UK, relocation to NZ and two further house moves and remain perfectly functional.

Perhaps your comment was a bit of a sweeping generalisation?

I'm not personally sympathetic, as there are just a handful of small-time importers.

There will be some local furniture manufacturers that will be hit (which I have sympathy for), and stores like Freedom/Farmers which will also take a hit, but that's the nature of business as market share will re-balance.

I know personally I have spent a fair amount of money buying stuff in IKEA most times visiting Australia, and I'm sure plenty other people have done the same. So I think this will provide a net positive gain.

We furnished our whole apartment in Melbourne with Ikea when we lived there 10ish years ago.  Have to say the bed and bedroom furniture was one of the best I've ever owned.  Very stylish and the mattress was phenomenal.  I'm very keen to get a bed from there if they open again.  The lounge furniture was average, but we invested more $ in the bedroom. It's the range of stuff, and the reasonable prices that appeals.  It's a nightmare store though, I'd much rather buy online than go to the store.  It's the 9th level of hell.

Spent some time in the Ikea store in Brisbane recently and happened to notice that their mattresses looked good - and had a 25 year warranty.

Edit: Just checked their website to see whether my memory was correct - and saw that they have quite amazing warranties on all sorts of products:

Lived in Sydney for 30 yrs and when we returned home to NZ a quarter of the 40 foot container was Ikea;

  • loads of Billy bookcases for our 1200 book collection
  • enough DVD shelves for 500 DVD's (we need more)
  • 1 large entertainment unit with two attached side mounted glass fronted display cabinets
  • one large buffet
  • three large/tall crystal/dinner set cabinets
  • large bathroom mirror cabinet
  • One huge four mirror door wardrobe (now in garage as storage cupboards)
  • Various Ikea remote operated lighting systems for all the cabinets and wall murals & pictures - they make fabulous low wattage lighting systems
  • and loads of spare parts
  • Ikea battery powered screw/nut/bolt driver
  • huge jar of Allen Keys cool

Australian Catalogue

Though as someone has already stated I do not think NZ will get the full catalogue. What we might get is a proportion with the option to order in from Aussie out of the catalogue. The Sydney Tempe store is 2.5Km from start to finish with restaurant - the Swedish meatballs are Ho Hum. They stock 99% of the world catalogue. We used to put aside a good half day when we took relatives. (The other half day was spent at Peter's of Kensington-they ship to NZ) Otherwise we pre-browsed the on-line or App catalogue and went in and out.

Still a fabulous experience though.

Can Not Wait - hope it comes to fruition.

I doubt that it will be in Fruition - more likely somewhere in West Auckland.

I see a business opportunity assembling flat pack furniture for the diy-challenged.

IIRC I think they offer a delivery and assembly option for a surcharge.

Edit: Found this on their UK site:

”How can I get help with assembly?

You can find digital copes of assembly guides next to the product description online, ask in store or contact us for general help. Or if you would like the furniture assembled* you can find more information on our services page.

*Assembly Service is not available for online orders.“

Sorry should of spelt it with a small 'f' as in fruition = fulfillment, realization, actualization, materialization, achievement, attainment, accomplishment, resolution; success, completion, consummation, conclusion, close, finish, perfection, maturity, maturation, ripening, ripeness; implementation, execution, performance.

But there has been false announcements and starts for years so we shall wait for fruition.

I think Fruition is as good a location as any, although the fabled "Not In Service" has an amazing bus service, while getting back from Erehwon  can sometimes be a bit tricky...

The franchisee rights to a new country is given by Inter IKEA Systems through profound market studies.

I have certainly heard of Fruition but never been there - I guess that could occur sometime.

Maybe the bus route to Not in Service will go through Fruition. The good thing about that route is that buses are never crowded but they will be hell once Ikea opens.

My understanding is that Ikea have exceptionally high demographic and geographic criteria for their store locations and those haven’t been met in NZ in the past.

Freedom doesn't have kitchen and other stuff. European stores are massive. I'd class it as a higher quality design oriented version of The Warehouse. Mass market middle ground between Warehouse and.. well nothing to compare it to in NZ..

According to Wikipedia their flat pack furniture is made of particle board. Not sure if it's overall any better than the rest of what's out there.
