I don’t know if the washing machine is a good deal or not, but the ‘extra’ warranty isn’t. The machine will either fail quickly, or will last for years.

paying 25% of the purchase price for a warranty is madness, and pure profit for the retailer.

Par for the course for Noel Leeming, Consumer's worst-rated retailer in NZ in multiple categories. So just getting anything from Noel Leeming would be a big no-no for me.

At least NL is a chain with single ownership. Harvey Norman's is a franchise. We've had the run around in the past buying at HN stores and not getting much cooperation from other branches that were more convenient for us to return the item to.

Whether it is brand new or refurbished, your purchase is covered under the Consumers Guarantees Act. Manufacturer and Retailers warranty mean nothing to dispute tribunal courts. A washing machine is expected to last atleast 6 to 8 years is what you would argue in court and win the case. Get a refund on the extra warranty. There is normally a 7 or 14 day cool down period for extra warranty refunds so save your $$$

I’ve been told that with their extra 5 year warranty, they’ll cover visits from repair agents and if they can’t fix it after 3rd visit, I’ll get a new washing machine.

Mostly with extended warranties you are paying to avoid future arguments about things that were probably covered anyway. Worth it to some people, not worth it to others. I never pay for them but might have been tempted in this case.

If I'm not mistaken, the FabricSmart is an 8.5 kg capacity machine, which is about 50mm deeper than the 7.5 kg ones. So make sure that works. It also needs room at the back for hoses/drain.

It’s 8kg.
I’ve measured it.

Space available:
660mm (wide)
870mm (height)
590mm (deep)

The machine specs:
600mm (wide)
850mm (height)
645mm (deep)
So it will stick out by at least 55mm (probably more, due to hoses at the back).

That it sticks out shouldn’t be an issue though, should it?
Plenty of space to open the door.

As per CGA, after 3rd repair they have to replace or refund with a new unit anyway so they are offering your rights under CGA anyway for $160.

Going to disputes tribunal cost just under $50 which is non refundable if you win the case. In majority of the cases, when the retailer receives a letter from tribunal court to show up on a specific day with your claim, they will settle with you before hand and agree with repair or replacement outside of their warranty period they state for the product.

You have to take into account now if you do not buy the extended warranty whether you can go to a laundromat as worse case scenario if machine breaks, retailer refuses to play ball, you file a complaint in tribunal court and retailer then bows down to your or decides to fight and loose anyway. Does that 10 to 15 working days of wait fits your timelines of wanting a working washing machine or laundromats trips are ok that is if the machine even breaks. In most cases, when retailer refuses to play ball and you mention you want it repaired or replaced under CGA, they will do it.

Do whatever you want to do man.

LOL. It’s hidden anyway in a separate wash room, which isn’t visible, when the door is closed.
She liked the price, so should be OK with this.
Might just run it past her anyway.
If anything, it provides us extra ‘shelf space’, if it sticks out.

The 8kg model is exclusive to Noel Leeming.

I picked up this washing machine, as well as the 8.5kg heat pump condenser dryer, at the Noel Leeming expo last year. For both, plus stacking kit ($~130) and delivery+installation (~$70) I paid $3000.

NL has them at $1698 and $2599 respectively however this is not on special. I did a lot of research before the expo and the cheapest I had found them was $1298 and $1949.

To answer the original question, obviously depends on wear/condition but yes I would say that is a good deal.

Perfectly happy with the machine itself too.

maslink: We’ve had one for about 3 years... very effective at cleaning the clothes, takes a pretty good sized load. Has been super reliable - have just replaced the rubber door seal, but that’s pretty much a maintenance thing for this type of washer.

I think I paid around $1400 for mine, so that seems like a pretty good price.

Same model?

looks identical. Just checked and mine is the WH 8560F1...not sure what the difference is.

Agree, may have sat in stock for a period too and also sometime refurbished just means someone returned it because it didnt fit etc.
