You may want to contact the company that installed your door frame to get them to install the new door panel for you then they would handle it all. Doors can be PITA, especially if they drop, or warp slightly, so you should make sure that if you do have problems with it in the future, they will come back to adjust it.

Doubly so if you're going with exotic options like offset hinges, which change the way the door opens and are a pain to get right.

Aluminium front doors would benefit from being thermally broken or thermally "enhanced'. I'd be wary of a swing door without multi-point locking.

Yep, our current doors are all thermally broken and multipoint, I've requested the same from HPW.

I think the glass door you are referring to is referred to as a plasma door, and I was looking at getting one at one stage. As others have said most doors come from one manufacturer in NZ. You may want to contact the company that installed your door frame to get them to install the  new door panel for you,  then they would handle it all. Doors can be  PITA, especially if they drop, or warp slightly, so you should make sure that if you do have problems with it in the future,  they will come back to adjust it.  I couldn't suggest one type over another as they have pros and cons. But what some people do is get a fibreglass or solid cord door made, and then get it spray painted at an auto paint shop, so get a good finish.

Thanks for the thoughts. Not after a glass door, that's about the worst insulation, and want to block light. My house is so old there are no record of it being built, everything is hand made from wood. The manufacturer is my neighbours Dad who built the house and has been dead for decades.

I'll need a whole new frame. I'm done with painting doors, so powder coated or color baked in somehow is the only option I'll look at. I'd be ok with stained fiberglass if it kept its color for a long time, but only if it comes with a proper frame and rubber seals, not the weird half-sealing system MDF linked to earlier in the thread.

I think alimimium may be the best option.

Glass plasma doors aren't transparent, they are a solid type of door and similar thickness to a fibreglass door, just the surface is made of coloured glass and often has an aluminum frame around the edge, so potentially lower maintenance. Although not sure if it will fade. More details at https://www.altherm.co.nz/entrance-doors . They have a range of different options for door types. I think the frame type may dictate the door type, as it will depend on what the joinery company /  installer will install. We installed a fibreglass door, and rolled it. The actual weatherproofing, seals etc, is usually all part of the frame, and not the door, so teh frame type is very important, especially the way the sill work.

Just wondering, when you say "glass plasma" I assume you mean something other than this:

While it would make for a very effective barrier to entry to a house, I feel the energy requirements for keeping it running would be prohibitive.

Thanks matt, I'll have a look at it. Glass + kids = generally bad even with tough glass, aluminum seems a safe bet.
