Dyson V15 was announced last week and is now available for sale in US. If you are keen on the Dyson, might be worth waiting for the latest V15 to hit NZ.

We have the Dyson V10 and have two dogs + carpet.

Here are some of our thoughts:

  • The filter on these units needs to be washed every month or two and needs to be bone dry before you use them again. It usually takes us 2-3 days.
  • Dyson customer service in New Zealand is exceptional, we've had the unit break twice on me

    • Once was my fault when I 'flooded' the motor by using a wet filter. Unit replaced free of charge even they can tell I've completely taken apart the unit.
    • Second time, I didn't know what was wrong and they had replaced the motor and casing.
    • Last week, it wasn't working again and the machine was out of warranty - they suggested sending out a new filter to see if it will fix the issue. Free of charge again. The filter came within 2 days and it fixed the issue.
  • Battery life is fine, we can usually vacuum the entire 220m2 house with it and the battery is replaceable with screws.
  • Plastic wise is fine, some parts are fairly cheap and loose after two years.
  • Suction is great.

Considering everything, we would buy another one if we were given the chance.

Yet another vote for the V11 Outsize (especially if you are looking to replace your current plug-in model completely)

We moved from a V10 and the V11:

  1. Much bigger barrel & capacity
  2. Much bigger and more efficient head
  3. Better suction
  4. removable/swappable battery
  5. "Auto" mode works really well.

The latter is especially good for us as it works out whether it is on hard floor, rug and carpet and adjusts the suction accordingly for maximum efficiency and pick up.

I do the whole house in it (3 bed single level) and have battery to spare - could easily do it twice or maybe 3 times I reckon. We have 3 cats and a dog and it is both gratifying and slightly gross to see how much hair and dust it picks up, even when the floor *looks* clean.

We got the V11 Absolute.  We also kept our old corded vacuum and a Xiaomi robot vacuum.

I find myself cleaning the high traffic areas everyday using the V11 due to ease and convenience of use.

The robot vacuum now runs only once a week to clean the hard to reach areas.

The corded vac is used for the car and maybe once a month for the house.

Batteries, when they go you will need to throw the whole thing out.

Not sure if this is the case these days.

Anyway, we have a Dyson V11 Outsize Vacuum Cleaner and it's seriously amazing. We also have an old Dyson that you pull along. The difference is night and day. With the stick model you just grab it and go. With the other one you have to pull the cord, find a power outlet, pull the whole thing around and it will bump into furniture. With the stick there's nothing of this. The V11 Outsize model is really good - the larger head means you can clean the house very quickly - in our case a full battery can clean a 100 sq m house a couple of times plus casual usage when you notice something on the floor.

I agree, we have the same, V11 Outsize and a normal Dyson ball pull vacuum.  We also had a V6 which is condemned to the garage and car cleaning duty but need to replace the battery in this one.  The difference between the V6 and V11 apart from the extra run time which is amazing and enough to do a 227m2 home, is that the V11 for whatever reason doesn't get any long hair tangled in its rotating cleaning head.

True. With the old Dyson I'd clean the cleaning head after every use. With the V11 I hardly have to touch it.

We have the Dyson V10 animal which is used every 2nd day to run over high traffic areas and then once a week to do a full house clean. We still kept our original Dyson corded vacuum which is only used for the cars as the flexible hose is so much easier to use in tight space than a stick vacuum.

a cheaper option
I have a $300 Hoover stick from Godfreys . It has powerhead , bagless , rechargable .
Charge lasts vac'ing the whole house twice .
Had it 3 years . Only issue is the dust collector is only just big enough . Has to be emptied after every time I use it as its 100% full .

I no longer use my 'normal' vac .

I also bought a $120ish stick vac that I use only as a dustbuster (use without the long stick & head) .

One of the (many!) accessories that came with our V11 Outsize is a clever extendable flexible hose.  I just put that on, along with the appropriate head for cleaning the car.  Magic :-)

We have a Dyson barrel vac which is many years old and a Dyson Stick Vac (V8 Animal), which we use almost exclusively now.

We have a small 3 brm house and it'll do the whole thing on a charge if running at normal speed. On turbo it'll do a room and a bit.

It came with all the attachments a human could ever need or want and it's great. we have it hanging up in the garage and just grab and vac as we need - unlike the hassle of getting the barrel vac out and plugging it in room by room etc.

My only gripe (which is sorted from V10 onwards) is the size of the dust bin. It needs emptying every room - but it's easy and touch-free, so no real hassle...just different to a barrel vac with larger compartment.

This info is great. I'm tending towards the V10 or V11/Outsize

The difference between the Animal and non-Animal models - I think that's just an extra head? No pets, not really needed.

Is there any gain in bin size between V10 and V11 standard?

The V15 looks like an amazing nerd machine - dust particle counting lol. NZ retail will probably be slow to arrive and high price initially, I'm thinking no V15 for me this time around.

I believe the V10 and V11 "standard" (although there are different "models") have the same size bin at just less than 0.8 litres.  One of the benefits to moving to the V11 Outsize is getting a 50% bigger bin.

For us the Animal was just the inclusion of a couple of extra tools, but it was on special, so we jumped at it for $300 off.

I would have preferred the V11 Outsize, but couldn't justify the massive jump in cost for us, based on our needs.

My Hoover ultra performer stick vac from Godfrey does a great job mainly because of the twirling brush head that cleans really deep, however it’s a double edged sword because every hair gets picked up and twisted hard into the bristles. It’s a major effort to clean the brush so I think if I bought a new stick vac I wouldn’t get one with a brush head for the time wasted trying to untangle and pull off hair. I do like that it has an integrated DustBuster you can pull off for use in the car.
