If you’re wanting something to last 10 years, invest in a Queen or at least a double rather than the King Single. You want something he can grow into not grow out of.

A bigger bed won't fit without a change of furniture etc. King Single is what will fit, so if it only lasts 5-6 years then we will have to accept that.

If our son asked us to buy him a queen size bed when he was 18 or whatever (The OP's son is only 12), I'd have laughed in his face and told him to go take a flying flew.

King singles are luxury for a kid.

Genes make that pretty unlikely. We don't have any big people in our family. At 18 I weighed 60KG, sadly those days are long gone! :)

Most beds will easily cope with 90KG. Hard to believe he would reach that.

i thought the same thing with my son, he weighed 65 Kg and was 5 foot 6 at 17, he is now 23 , 6 foot 1 and just over a 100kg

Common sense is not as common as you think.

And if he's anything like I was at that age (flatting uni student), it'll be a $50-$100 relic off Trade Me 😄 (okay maybe 18-20yrs old).

I recently listened to a podcast that talked about the American mattress industry and they mentioned that mattresses over there have massive markups; a mattress retailing for $2000 typically wholesales for about $200-$300. I guess that's why they can offer large discounts all the time and still make a nice profit.

So I went into Brownies who get good local reviews and spoke to a nice lady. Went back with my Son and he tried the 3 beds she recommended. Prices weren't visible but he liked the most expensive one. They did a reasonable deal on it, provided free delivery and installation upstairs and a mattress protector on a mattress with a 10-year warranty. It had all of the 'good' features, so we are all sorted. Spend under $800, which was above the original budget but probably an OK deal for what it is. It was about $120 more than the one that was less comfortable, didn't have the side support, which interestingly without speaking about, my son noticed between the two top contenders, and a 5 year warranty.

I slept on a mattress on top of a door supported by 4 plastic milk crates I kid you not. In a super tiny flat converted from a hallway and bathroom into a flat. Most of the roof sloped because it was an outside wall with a mansard roof so you couldn’t stand up on the whole floor area ether lol.

Those were the days.

Good edge support makes a big difference to the usable area of the mattress (especially on smaller beds like a king single), so you/he made a good choice going with one that has it.

Yup. I felt there were *possibly* equivalent cheaper models available in the market that might have saved me $200 or more, but the hardest thing is comparing features, when everyone calls the technology in their beds something different and some places were obviously importers, so you never know if the warranty will stand up.

The kid was smart to note that the edge was stronger and choose that one.

For easier bed making especially if it’s next to a wall. Do the Swedish thing. They put a fitted sheet over the main mattress...this stays on all the time. Then, a 5cm topper pad goes over that and you dress it with your bottom sheet. Makes changing sheets really easy as the topper is light and easy to tuck under unlike the heavy main mattress. It’s really good for kids or people with arthritis in their hands.

So a couple of months on, and my Son could not be happier. We went away for the long weekend, and he mentioned twice how much he wanted to be back into his own bed. He heads to bed at least 15 minutes earlier now to read as he seems more comfortable, and spends a lot of time when he is in his room on the bed as opposed to the floor.

Worthwhile investment I think!
