insane: Fair enough, so perhaps Solar without a battery?

Do they still do zero $ upfront, or are those days over?

If you mean those free solar deals, versus interest free terms, then I doubt they'd do it. It wouldn't make any sense for them to install solar on a site that is essentially using a swimming pool as a giant heat sink.

We (Blenheim) have a heat-pump on ours, and a rubber mechanised cover.  It's currently sitting at 33*C (the cover is at 60*C!). I'm WFH and I've been in three times today.

The heat pump cuts out at 28*C, and it runs for about an hour per day Dec - Feb.  We use the pool from Labour weekend to Easter weekend.

If I had solar it would save me money during the shoulder months only.

Ah nice! Ok if the blankets really are that effective then that's a great sign! Although I do like it a bit warmer - ~31 :)

Is that rubber cover the ~3-4mm foam like ones, or the bubble type? Also what colour is it?

Ours is a black rubber cover about 2 -3mm thick that runs in little tracks under the deck along the side of the pool.  It retracts under the deck at one end of the pool.  It's electrically driven and you cover/uncover with a key switch.  The only PITA is that you have to an automatic pump on the cover to remove and water that pools there.

When our pool was built the council accepted these covers as an alternate to a fence.  Foolishly, someone sought a declaration from MBIE on this and MBIE (being a govt dept) said "No!".  Eventually everyone with these type of covers will have to put a fence up.

When the previous owners put a pool in the council made them spend thousands fitting an elaborate backflow preventer at the toby box.  The they made us put one on the garden tap, event though there is an air gap in our filling system and backflow is impossible (unless there is a biblical scale flood).  The backflow preventer on the tap makes a hideous howling sound when the pool is topping up.  Councils ...
