How bad is the rot?

If the wood is literally falling apart then replace.

If its only got some soft spots I'd probably just remove the soft bits with a wire brush (chisel?), treat the rest with Metalex, fill any holes and then repaint. Especially if the roof has been replaced.

This is pretty much what he's done. The rot didn't appear as deep as initially thought, so he's gone with the Metalex and bog route for the interim.

It possibly took longer to do that than replace it.

Years ago I had a roof done and even though the screws were in a straight line they ran off the edge of a purlin that was twisted.
It wouldn’t have taken half an hour for them to remove 4 sheets, attach another purlin and rescrew the iron.
