Anyone actually know if GIB production is lower than normal due to Covid or anything else?

NZ is not building 10 x as many houses as before - stats here . If the increase from renovations and 50% more builds (compared to 2-3 years ago) has maxxed out production than it must have been flying close to the wind already.

The GIB factory could have a word with those making big orders to deter stockpiling - which all has to be stored which costs money anyway.

I believe they had to close to some extent or another during the lock downs and also had an issue with one of their production lines.

Builders etc wont care about the small cost of storing the extra product over the delays it would cost them.

Was at bunnings Mt wellington this morning and pretty much everyone in the trade area was there for GIB. They would have had about 3-4 pallets of different kinds there which was all sold to people. and a long queue outside.

I thought they had allowed building materials companies to remain open in the 2021 lockdown, as I thought they were considered essential due to the housing crisis. There used to be a few alternative brands, I think bunnings at one time had elephant board.

I would ring bunnings to see if they do have stock if it is showing stock on their website. Not sure if they will reserve it.

I've heard Carters have a lot of building supplies stockpiled somewhere in Seaview. Probably lots of empty industrial buildings there so long as Peter Jackson hasn't filled them with film sets. How much have the Fletcher group kept under its wing? They own Winstones.

Alternative brands came a cropper getting approval as bracing. Apparently the paper finish is different so you can't mix and match without it showing.

Shoes2468: Tried all the normal suspects mitre10 bunnings, etc. only need 7-8 sheets, wondering if anyone knew of anywhere with Gib at the moment?

In Auckland as of 1-2 weeks ago availability was December if you order now :-(.

My builder mate says they are providing product to existing accounts first to honour their loyalty, and not keen or perhaps able to supply to new customers.

Perhaps they will sell a small DIY amount - still worth asking!

Why aren't we seeing boatloads of plasterboard being sent to NZ? Surely the Aussies have some to spare?

Sure I know most planning documents specify Gib, but this sort of delay in unsustainable. Imagine Bunnings and Mitre 10 having nothing to sell for the rest of the year, not to mention the builders who are going bust because they can't finish their work.

Because as you noted it will be specified as Gib on the building consent,

"architects specify "Gib" as if it were a generic term for plasterboard; and council inspectors are inflexible about allowing builders to swap it out."

Also regarding shipping from OZ, have seen international supply chains at the moment, they are all totally screwed up, you can't find international containers for love  or lots of money....

Do councils issue implementation guidance like some standards bodies? This seems like the sort of thing that could do with official clarification...

I believe the problem is NZ uses plasterboard as a bracing element unlike most other places. Winstones probably test their own product and other brands only to point out that they fail. There probably isn't a 3rd party with the required test facility.

Maybe it could be possible to redesign the framing to use something else for bracing.

My friend is building a small house on his section for his son, which he designed and drew up himself and is also doing the project management on as he did on his own house years earlier. From the get go they planned on using plywood instead of gib. I think they're at the painting stage now.
