Thanks. I personally quite like the look of sea fog.

Yes, I think an in-home consultant is probably a good idea actually, just got to get it past er indoors as she hates paying for stuff like this.

We have LED lights in almost all of the house, but two areas have halogens which will be replaced in the next couple of months.

Thanks for the tips in general, we will try those ideas.

For my place, I used Sea Fog, though just for my doors and trim work (around doors, cornice, skirting). My ceilings were done in Black White, with my walls done in Half Foggy Grey and hallways and bathrooms done in Quarter Foggy Grey.  Lots of grey around my place, but I did like that that.

Always seemed to notice the differences side by side, but I'm not sure I would tell if I didn't have things side by side and they were just on the walls etc.

I am thinking that the furnishings and furniture would help "darken" the paint, and our lights are not cold either, so, potentially even a relatively bright white probably won't be super jarring, though, I definitely think I'd err on the side of a warmer white.

I think I'll probably start with the in-store consultant and see how it goes.

Comments from potential painters was that tea was no longer used much, and that brighter whites were all the rage (Black White being an example).

We are concerned about going too bright as we prefer warmer/softer tones, but acknowledge our rooms are moderately dark and going lighter is probably a reasonable idea. We will likely replace our curtains later this year too, and move to lighter colours too, cream or some variant potentially.

Should we just pay the $170 for someone to come into our house and take a look?

Every man and his wombat uses Black White, it's the Comic Sans of house painting, so for that one your decision is easy: Anything but Black White.

To do it yourself, go to M10 or Bunnings and grab one of every colour card you think you'd go with, then of the particular colours that catch your eye buy some sheets of A3 paper and a test pot of each colour and cover an A3 sheet with it, then hold it up against the ceiling, in bright areas, in shaded areas, with sunlight, and with artificial light. That'll give you a pretty good idea of what the room will look like in that colour, and a much better idea than the tiny panels on the colour cards, which are meant for colour matching and not choosing a colour. In particular a colour that looks fine on a postage stamp will often be far too bright when spread across an A3-sized surface.

If you really want to spent $170 on getting someone to tell you what to use, PM me and I'll send you my back account details, once the money arrives I'll tell you to use Black White, it's very trendy.

We found white pointer to be a more subdued white.  Of the umpteen off white samples that Ms Aqua brought home (that all looked the same to me), that's the one I pointed to at random.

I felt kind of like the mark in card trick, but I was very happy with my 'choice' in a sunny house.

Some notes on whites from a qualified Colour Auditor: Paint door/window frames half or quarter X if the walls are X, this looks white in comparison to the wall but not enough to be strongly contrasting. Paint the ceiling quarter X or a similar off-white rather than pure white for the same reason. More generally, use white with the same tint as the base for the walls, e.g. if the walls are in a brown base then stay with brown-tinted whites.

Colours are strongly influenced by how they're lit, we did portions of the house in Moon Glow which is pale greenish when there's green light filtering through the trees, pale yellow in direct sunlight, and a neutral whiteish under artificial light, it's a magic chameleon colour.

Went to resene for something else and had to chat to one of their 'colour' consultants. It was quick and rather discouraging.

She basically said, it's your house, paint it a colour you like... Duh!

They did sell me some A3 sheets and a couple of colour samples, and a paint brush. She sort of handed me stuff and said 'take this'. Wasn't until I was leaving she took me to the till for the pleasure!

She mentioned Black White and said it was very popular, so 'gave' me a sample pot of that and another less bright colour called Half Alabaster. When I look at the sample chart it looks to me that Half Alabaster is 'more' white!

Half Merino looks nice, quite a lot brighter than Half Tea but still warmer than Black White.

My kids are tasked with painting the A3 sheets in the weekend.

Lesson learned - Resene have terrible service and their colour “consultants” may as well be colourblind in my experience. Also their paint is actually terrible and overpriced in my humble opinion, and this lines up with what I’ve been told by a few professional painters I’ve worked with extensively.

As with all things, YMMV.

I am not a painter but have have painted the inside of a couple of houses and I have found Protective paints to be much better quality.  Excellent coverage, where most Bunnings/Resene's paints seem to need three coats so that stopping marks can't been seen the protective stuff only needs two.  It also seems better wearing.  I don't know if they will sell to members of the public (I have a family member with contacts).

If you take a paint formula in from one of the other brands they can replicate it pretty close.
