My uPVC windows are six or seven years old, never washed other than with rainwater :-) but still looks brand new.

For a new build I would look at uPVC over Aluminium as it is cheaper ( when we got ours ) than standard Aluminium extrusion, the thermally broken Aluminium was 40% more.

The mechanisms in the doors and windows are far more secure than aluminium windows too.

I know enough to be dangerous

The additional percentage is likely the extrusion price difference, as you essentially have two pieces separated by a nylon or similar seperator connector. There also isn’t much competition in the aluminium extrusion market in NZ. But labour is one of the big costs and that would be similar no matter what extrusion was used. We didn’t regret getting thermally broken frames. However the windows position in the wall relative to the insulation can make a difference. Many windows in NZ are installed on the outer surface of the wall, whereas overseas it is more common for windows to be recessed back in the wall.

Wazza69: Hi all. Thanks for the responses. Dad decided to go with the thermal break and the e-glass. It was the upcoming regulation changes which convinced him (although he would be slightly before them). I’m sure it’s the right choice

thats a good choice.

i would plan for the new reg's. tho i'm not sure on what the changes will be for your aera.

we have plenty of pvc house products that sit out in the sun for decades with no issues. eg gutters and downpipes.

as an alterative there is fibreglass which is understand is stronger and can be easily painted.

Funny, pvc spouting and down pipes are just the products I was thinking of. PVC spouting moves, gets brittle, warps and twist. Down pipes are better bad, but they do get brittle.

PVC windows seem more solid than guttering type materials.

Can they be painted or prepainted to prolong their life? I know you can get PVC gutters prepainted. I certainly wouldn't want white windows frames anyway, at least with aluminium they come in a range of different colours or anodized.
