insane: Could you use a bunch of Sensibos to automate them?

Yeah, worst case we could definitely go down that path, but it seems a waste given that they have wifi built in. It's a shame more manufacturers don't opt for open interfaces.

Have you considered using Home Assistant? They have at least one Haier integration.

My contact tells me that HA, Smarthings etc is in the roadmap for F&P/Haier connected appliances. Can't say when though.

Yeah HA was my plan, and yes, I'd seen that one. Haven't tried it yet, but that's what I was referring to with the 3rd party integration. It doesn't look complete and seems like it's all had to be reverse engineered.

That would be awesome. Tell your contact I'll happily beta test for them. I'm fact, I'll even help with API development if they need me to 😉

ok any more to report on Haier heatpump performance one year on?

Im close to investing in ducted heatpump throughout the house, and the haier system is very appealing because its so much cheaper than (other brand proposed by my installer) Daiken. Im especially interested in the performance of the SmartHQ mobile app to control the system. I have the app already since it can control our wifi F&P oven, but I wanna know if anybody has used it to control AC zones, schedules etc???

the heatpump installer wants to charge heaps for a third-party wired controller panel, but the way I see it, if the (free) wifi app can do all, if not more, and its conveniently in your pocket or beside your bed, not at the other end of the house - then why would you waste your money?

I've also checked the specs, and although I know you cant trust specs, - both brands have identical published dB levels indoor and outdoor.

any thoughts?

Yep, some more thoughts a year on from purchase. Of our 6 Haier split systems, we've now had to replace one, the oldest one at I guess what's about 3 years old. The controller board was faulty and it kept turning itself off and on.

While our installer left a little to be desired when it came time for a warranty repair, Haier was simply fantastic to deal with, not a single complaint about the process. When they could no longer source the right part they offered to replace the entire thing, no questions asked.

In terms of connectivity, I can't tell you how absolutely awful SmartHQ is: it took me about 5 goes to try and pair the first unit until I got the exact series of steps right. But once paired, the integration with HA via a HACS add-on was pretty painless, and it's super nice to have it all automated, ensuring that they're on before people arrive at the office and all turned off at the end of the business day. I haven't as yet had any devices drop off WiFi that I've noticed.

Overall, still a definitive thumbs up for Haier from me. Would purchase again.

This thread has been enormously useful. I'm a new-ish build with punishing heat in the upstairs rooms and resigned to a ducted system. Downstairs has a comically over-specced huge heat pump that does the job but the upstairs rooms where people actually live are like furnaces.

We are soon moving into a house with ducted central heating powered by a diesel furnace in the basement. Thinking about replacing the furnace with a ducted heatpump connected to the existing ducting.

The problem with this is the lack of individual room control. All you have is the fairly ineffective baffles on the outlet grilles so you end up heating or cooling the whole house.

the problem you may have doing that, may be duct size.

does it have aircon?

No aircon and the duct diameter is large, maybe 250mm.

A friend did this and I think he had custom adapters jobbed up.

Individual split systems would work better but positioning it all would be painful and visually ugly and the ducting already exists.

Multi head split system and cap the ducts is probably the recommended system.

you would need to design the system and see if duct size is big enough. 250mm ducts are not large, depending on the size of the house/rooms they feed.

a common problem overseas where they have old oil/gas fired hvac and they fit aircon, but aircon (or heat pump heating) requires bigger ducts. if duct size is a tad small then you could get away with undersizing the heat pump. another common problem overseas (and here as well) is oversized heat pumps which will not work with small ducts. that leads to a lot of issues.

so overall match the heat pumps to the ducts, but that may not be enough heating/cooling for your house. just keep in mind undersized heating/cooling is only going to be bad on the days with extreme temps but it will work better the rest of the time.
