I would suggest going with a window mount aircon unit off trademe rather than a portable aircon unit.

They are really not good and only work for those sitting in front of them - within the noisy area. They are as loud as sitting next to a car with its engine idling.

Once upon a time you used to be able to buy dual-vent portable aircon units in NZ and they work brilliantly but for some strange reason they just dont import them anymore.

Eg. Trade Depot are local stockists of Midea but for some reason just choose not to bring in the Midea Duo

Unfortunately, that solution wouldn't work in our situation.

I have the cheap one from Bunnings for our studio apartment and it's working well.

It is noisy and creates negative pressure but it kept the studio comfortable even when it was bright and sunny these few days. We've gotten used to the noise, it's not overly loud and could sleep with it running.

At least it helps drop the temperature unlike an evaporative cooler. I guess it is the best option if you want something non permanent and have a puny budget like me.

I had one of these in Melbourne for a while. A decent one but can't recall the brand or details. What I do recall is the prohibitive noise, and the fact that I had to sit in front of it to get any benefit as it wasn't any good at cooling an apartment room. It was only good at blowing cold air a short distance before it was heated by the ambient air. Still, some of that may be because Melbourne is made of brimstone in summer. Sitting in front was fine in our space, but my God, the noise. It meant everything else had to be exponentially louder to hear over the noise, like the TV.

This is going in our bedroom.

I am hoping to run it for a few hours before sleeping and cool the room.

My wife is sensitive to noise, but right now we have a fan running full tilt instead, so it's not ideal anyway.

Way noisier than a fan in my experience, but hey this was in 2009 so the tech may have progressed.

Just got this Goldair with wifi, 3 year warranty etc, price matched against jbhifi at mitre10. Guy said 5th he had done that day. $1149 down to $698.

Yes it is noisy but happy with it.

They are several times louder than a fan. A fan tends to give a quiet woosh that you won't hear outside the room, while alot of these you can hear at least a room if not two over.

Personally, I have a Dimplex portable reverse eco AC unit 2.9kW unit and vent it through the window - works a treat for the 2nd level floor which gets way too hot.

Stick to a good unit and should do the trick - downside is the noise factor though.

I recently replaced my old Dimplex Portable unit and had initially thought the 3.2kw unit (SKU:373137) from Trade Depot was the Duo based on the shape and design (must be using the same housing) but was sad to hear it's not, doesn't seem to be anywhere else that stocks them either.

In the end I got the Midea 3.5kw cooling only (SKU 373135 from Trade Depot) and was pleased to see the listed cooling capacity was actually 3.8kw rather than the 3.5kw it's sold as, very please with the performance and the Wifi connectivity & Controls work great for my requirements. Noise wise it's about on par with my old unit although the noises seem to be a little less consistent.
