If you have had some massive water bills due to a water leak and you show that you've had it repaired by a plumber, Watercare will refund you some money.

They will do it once in a long period. If you are just patching up a crappy pipe and only have a couple of hundred of water bill, don't claim it because when the pipe goes next time and the bill is 1000s they will only credit back the wastewater portion of the bill.

As an update, the plumber replaced this fitting. It was leaking through a pinhole in the plastic at quite a decent velocity. Looking at our bills, the previous two and I suspect April's (which I'll get any day now) will be quite a bit higher. I just spent the morning look back over the past few years use, and we average about 11 kilolitres per month, February and March this year were 28 and 24 (estimate) and I suspect April's will be similar.

So once we have that bill I'll email Watercare and let them know. I'll attempt to sort the neighbouring drain and the colossal tree root that I suspect has caused the issue.

Maybe also manually submit a manual water reading now to ensure you get a more accurate bill.

well its my turn.

trying to track where the leak is and find where the pipes go is not much fun. kinda hard to see it leaking on surface when its been raining. as it turns out water does flow up hill, kinda.

this place has PVC pipe for the main, and its got the classic elbow split. where i found it coming out of the ground was uphill from where the split was. also found that someone had put a fencepost directly on top of the water pipe. take part of the fence down, pull out the post, only to find the leak wasn't there.
