Bunnings had a range of table lamps on clearance when I was there last. Not sure if its across all branches or not. This was at wairau valley one.

It's an ikea cheapy

Nice. How well does it work? A more diffuse light source would probably look better than direct, but right now I either have to have my camera off or use terrible overhead lighting.

It's good. I'm not using a bright bulb and it's on a big desk so it's well off to the side.

If you've got shelving behind your desk you can mount an LED strip in a channel that'll light up the desk indirectly. I've got one like that on my workbench, it came with a diffuser but I've never used it since there's no direct light.

If you're feeling really picky and have the know-how, drive it from a linear power supply so you get no noise or flicker.  I got my LED strips from Sparts, they have good-quality stuff, actually give real technical info on what they're selling, and were very helpful with sorting out what I specifically needed.
