Blinds in the window frame in front of you might help reduce the mixed lighting. Perhaps sunshade blinds?

For lighting I think the uplights mentioned earlier are the best idea I've seen. I tried putting a video light to the side of my monitor but it was blinding. Indirect lighting where the light source isn't in your field of view would be important for me.

We already have a net curtain, but they are only so effective. Not keen on blinds as we plan on replacing this window with PVC, and could change the size too.

I am certainly leaning towards the floor lamp/uplight at the moment.

Purchased the Nouveau floor lamp from Mitre10 as recommended earlier, along with a Philips 40W TrueForce Core LED lamp.

Lights up the room perfectly, especially with the overcast day we've got today. The main light in the room doesn't need to be used, in fact it appears to have no impact with the new light on. (No surprise with the wattage difference).

Thanks for all the input.

Can you put lighting in a wall sconce above the two desks, so you get light onto your work area without making the rest of the room too bright?

If there's shelving over the desks you can also put LED strips on the underside to light the work area, that's what I use for my electronics workbench.

Staple a tarp over it in that case.

Put some of these over the desks.
