Thanks for the headsup @bagheera. @kiwifidget and I know each other well and live around the corner so it's definitely a freebee!

Thanks Matt, I appreciate that, plus maybe I get to see it happening??

No freebee though, your time is valuable and I imagine the consumables are pricey enough.

At least beersies and winesies right?!

I don't think you want to watch it happening. It's going to take 5 hours to print.

I'll let you know when it is done.

Cheers.

Yep. It's on the way.

You should be warned. 3d printing is quite the rabbit hole. When starting out there are a squilion reasons why a print will fail from nozzle temperature to blockages to filament type issues to bed adhesion to firmware. This list is endless. Of course I bought a cheaper printer so the frustration levels are probably commensurate with your budget.

It is both intensely satisfying and frustrating at the same time. My printer is pretty sorted these days but I don't know if I recommend it as a hobby or not!

@hairy1 I hear you 😀

I'm in town for 2-3 hours, on my way out now, but I'll call in on my way home just for a gawk maybe?

Yep. Feel free. Quite interesting to look at the process.

Based on the length shown looks like it would cost $12 to print at Auckland libraries, certainly not very cheap.

Budget isn't so much of a concern these days.  It's more of the generational difference between older and newer devices, or brand differences between those that desire tinkerability vs those that desire simplicity and consistency.  I got a Bambu Lab A1 for under $800 delivered the other day, and omg it's a game changer.  The speed is crazy, almost unbelievable, but the quality is also excellent.  I spent days or weeks dialing in my first printer ($1200 at the time) to get a good benchy.  The A1 spat a better one out in 19 minutes straight out of the box, after auto bed levelling and auto-everything-elseing.  I've had 1 failed print out of 10 so far, and that was likely because I didn't use supports.

It's never been as accessible to new people who want to check it out.

I spent my scrimpings on a P1S last year, and I'm still reeling from the first Benchy print! Bambu is an awesome starting point for anyone wanting to get into the hobby.

3D printing has definitely moved from pure tinkerer hobby to plug-n-play.

Took me about a year to fully dial in my Ender 3.  It's still not what the purists would call perfect but I can get robust functional prints out of it now in either PLA or ASA.
