Ive got 12mm in my garage, when I built an office space in there.  on that 12mm, I have heavy cabinets on french cleats with many tools in them (small drop saw, planer, belt sandar, angle grinder, circular saw, many jigs), big lot of tool batteries.  

 

 

 

12mm is plenty.  18mm is total overkill.
