We're paying 15.7c/kwh with Mercury inc GST and 2% prompt payment discount, fixed for 24 months about 8 months ago. Octopus for us is 24c / 18c / 12c peak / off-peak / night, which would end up more expensive for us. I think we got a good deal with Mercury.

I'd call that an exceptional deal, but it's clearly a special rate, their website tells me I'd be paying $0.2619 per kWh.

Thats a great rate. I have heaps of people telling me they are changing from mercury because they started putting rates up.

I'm also with Mercury paying 14.64 cents/kWh with a 2% discount.
Daily fixed charge is $2.24 though
No news on the price going up for me and I'm out of contract.

Our consumption and export characteristics have changed significantly since upgrading our PV and EV charging installation in mid August. Presently with Ecotricity but the off-peak all weekend deal with them is now not really relevant as we can effectively charge both EVs on solar only, and between the Paladin diverter and Evnex charger they can match our consumption to our generation exceptionally well:

Once we have a clear month of data our installer plans to run a simulation using various suppliers' price plans but I'm guessing that Octopus will take some beating with their 17c FIT and 18c night rate. Meridian have quoted similar export pricing but not on their cheap night rate 'EV Plan', and that requires a 5 year sign up which isn't a great idea in the current volatile energy sector IMO.

Yet in another part of Wellington we are paying $2.33/day + 22c/kwh + Levy inc GST.

I think I just happened to be looking when they had a really good deal going. It was just after Christmas last year. Looking at Powerswitch just now, we'd be paying about 20% more if we were looking for a power provider now.

We are also going to be installing solar with a battery soon - does anyone have any experience using a battery with Contact's 3 hours free? I'm interested to hear anyone's experience about how much you were able to top up the battery over the 3 hours and use this to offset other usage etc.

Also does anyone have a referral code for Contact?

Yes, I have 10kWh of battery and normally it charges the entire thing completely during 9-12, but if the neighbours are using a lot of power during that time (as well as us - e.g. 14kW), our house's voltage drops, which affects the battery charging kW from 4kW to sometimes < 1kW, which is not enough to charge a 10kWh battery in three hours!

Yes I do have a Contact referral code, PM me for one if you like.

Also in Wellington getting 16.00c/kWh with Mercury plus 2% discount.
It was the best deal at the time without needing to actively manage the times we used electricity, even with Octopus etc. It would have been a marginal difference, especially if you factored inflation over the two years fixed with Mercury.

My 2 year contract with Mercury is ending,
14.54c/kwh rate,

And they are refusing now to do 2 year contracts.
And their new (special) 1 year rates are 20% higher.

Like a bunch of guys here, I run a decent sized Home Lab, so cannot do anything material in the way of 'load shifting'

I find the power comparison websites 'useless' & wildly inaccurate.

Current useage is 2558 kwh per month.
$507.52 Current Mercury bill

I've run the numbers for the following (Auckland based)
$611.81 New Mercury special offer - 1 year locked.
$638.65 Octopus
$621.81 Frank Energy

Any recommendations on who else I should look at, to try and stay around the $500 mark?

Check the Flick Electric Off Peak plan. I also have a large home lab that's one third to half my consumption.

Usage over the previous 4 weeks: 2620kWh / $498.48

As you haven't mentioned so I'm assuming you haven't got solar. There would be a pretty strong incentive to do so based on that consumption, particularly if it is weighted towards daylight hours and/or it includes EV charging that could be scheduled to suit.

He said he had a home lab, so it's a pretty consistent 24x7 load. I'm in the same boat..
