"....The Choice app has been working well for me today, lots of alerts. "

There may have actually been networking issues for me that caused me to miss out on notifications. My iPad says it got alerts this morning that my iphone didn't get.

Is power prices seasonal? E.g. If you fix a contract with s provider for 12 months now how does that affect my summer prices?

Flick vs. Electric Kiwi anyone? A little confused.

Also unsure what the typical real world saving of EK's Hour of Power would be compared to Flick's low spot price (plus margin) during this Hour of Power (while it won't be free, it would be a cheap hour of power on Flick anyway).

With Flick you pay the market floating rate, plus line charges, plus Flick Margin. I tried to look at the Electric Kiwi website to compare, but they want to know everything about you (phone number, age, etc) to tell you what they charge.

Anyone know why power prices are spiking just about every morning this week?

It's winter and there's storms. There has been major trips in both islands in the mornings at the moment when load has come on

You can check out SO for notices, Trips fall into excursions but you also have formal notices and client notices

One would guess Demand.

It has been a lot colder across the country this week, so as every one gets up for the day, they are turning on the heater.

Ah interesting. It's just been fairly mild and fine in Wellington, prices have spiked to fairly high levels, which seems to be caused more by failures or unpredictable demand.

Have any Flick customers seen the $ damage from the spikes on Tuesday?

I got an email yesterday, placating users about the up/down nature of the Flick charging system, which indicates that there'll be a significant impact on charges in that period, but the cost for that day's not yet visible. (I do see the peaks going off the chart in the morning and evening; luckily our usage was on the way down in the morning as the heatpump had done it's initial warming of the house [hopefully!]; not so lucky in the early evening...)

Wow will people really have to pay that? I am in the South Island where it seams like flick makes a lot more sence. But even paying a 10% of a unit at that price would almost wipe out my savings for this year.

Edit: As has been pointed out I failed at reading properly.

I have 0.18 units at $4.80 /kwh. That makes my exposure $0.80. This is helped by two things - hot water heats 2am to 7am only, with boosts at specific times, and heating comes on early so by the time 7am rolls around heating requirements are minimal.

That's per MWH. The kWh unit price is a thousandth of that; $4 - $5/kWh

Thanks I relised I may have made this mistake about 10 mins after posting it.

Cost me about $15 more than normal, for the ~2 hours it was crazy high.

Ouch! That's a bit steep!

Luckily we only used about 1kw during that time.

Saying that, we usually save about $15-$20 a week, so an extra $15 from time to time is not that bad :)
