andrewNZ: I'd say a large part of the price difference is down to the building company buying loads of them and therefore getting them at a very good price. 8k is a big difference though

We get iron both longrun and tiles at a very good rate and even the rrp of $15 l/m for coro vs our cost price for tiles the difference is no where near 8k. There is seriously something fishy about the 8k price difference.

I would ask the builder for a breakdown of costs in regards to the roofing. If you want I would be happy to have a look at the plans and give you a ballpark quote so you have a more accurate idea of cost if that helps at all.

Very surprised at the difference as Corona Shake was more expensive for my recent new build (Earthquake repair so maybe Chch pricing is different). I personally think long run looks cheap and shake tiles look awesome. YMMV. On a new house most roofing work and services that will walk on roof are done with build so there is no reason for anyone to walk on the roof for many years. I am in a high wind area/Snow (Selwyn) and they moved the pitch slightly to compensate. Finished roof in Carona Shake looks awesome.

FWIW the Housing Corp was using steel tile when it started replacing old concrete tiles in our area but all their recent ones have been in coro,

Thanks everyone. I have quoted some of your comments and send to the company, I am waiting for their reply about why there is that much difference between these two options. Will put update once I get their response. Thanks for all of you for your comments and sharing your experiences.

my mums rental has steel tiles and oh my god are they crap! i dented at least 8 of them walking over to adjust the freeview aerial , even when walking on the "correct" part of the roof. why anyone would put steel on the roof is anyones guess. i am sick to Feckin death of noisey roofs. give me concrete tiles every day , and not be kept awake all night by the rain.

I would guess that place is a lot older. Also, dude I think you got the walking totally wrong. Last time I was on one of those you could have mistaken me for spiderman easily.

To have concrete tiles your house has to be designed to handle about 10 times the weight of a steel roof.
