kiwijunglist: $300 sounds like heaps. Duct should be $50-100 and vent should be $25-50.

It's difficult to say without knowing exactly what is required and the purpose. Anything non-standard tends to get expensive quickly.

I'm assuming this is purely for venting outside, in which case non-insulated 200mm ducting would be all that is required. That's around $12.65 for 3m at my local sheet metal dealer. Solid spiral tube is $19.55 per meter.

If he needs solid bends or round to rectangular adaptors etc., it gets into the hundreds very quickly. I ended up making a round to rectangular adaptor as it was cheaper for me to DIY out of foam and fibreglass than it was to get someone to make one out of steel, and similar in price to purchasing an off-the-shelf adaptor that wasn't quite the dimensions I needed.

Replying from page one, but there should be no vents in soffit above that water heater. Should be minimum 300mm to side. But I'd always try for further.

Could be that im looking at the wrong shops. Been looking at smooth air. And thats for a roof cowl with flashing for my concrete tile roof.
Tried today and don't think I could even fit a 150mm duct into the soffit.
What some sheet metals places that I should be looking at?

Smooth air aren't bad, I've had a bunch of stuff from them. Pretty good gear. Ask if there is any chance of getting trade price (if they haven't already). Say they were recommended or something.

Sorry. I've been away for a few days.

If you're in Auckland, I recommend Jensen Metal Products (Penrose). Their prices are cheaper than Smooth Air, offer different lengths of ducting and they do custom parts. Limited selection of products however. Between them and Smooth Air, I could get what I needed (not including custom parts).

rkl: ... What did you end up doing?...

Our house builder installed flexible ducting from our rangehood to the suffit but we didn't like this - it looked like sh1t and we could see that overtime the air extraction would start to clog and eventually fail. We asked them for the cost of putting ducting straight up and through the metal roof tiles. They provided an estimate that was far too high and included the cost of re-installing the scaffolding to make roof access safe, but we think they simply didn't want to do it and hoped we would settle on their original 'do-nothing' solution.

As we already had an estimate from another company to provide natural light to the pantry using sun-tunnels, so we asked them to quote for this job too. They did both jobs for a fraction of the original quote from the builder.
