Ikea are moving to a larger number of "order and collection points" which are smaller stores with subsets of their range on display,

I suspect that most of what we will see in NZ will be this smaller format, with maybe one or two full format distribution centres which are used to provide stock to these smaller stores and online delivery...

About three weeks ago, I heard in private from a Whakatane council staff member that a "major retailer" would be making an announcement on the 20th of December. Ikea would certainly qualify as a major retailer and I haven't seen any other major announcements today, but why would a random council know about it unless it affected the town? So you could be right; there may be many collection points scattered around the country.

Or maybe it's all just a big coincidence!

That's not how IKEA operate...

Yip I know, that's why I said it would be interesting.

It would also interesting if Elon musk flew to NZ and said he was setting up a Tesla Factory too, Its just not gonna happen :)

Never say never, there's a cannabis referendum coming up after all.

I have lived in a couple of countries with Ikea stores. I don't really get the hype around it.

The idea is good, cheap, transportable furniture. We loved it in Canada.

Yeah, I (now) live 1.25 hrs from one... meh.

Mrs ordered a cupboard online a few years ago (because I refused to drive 45 minutes to the shop near adelaide airport at the time) and it's not really any better than any particle board furniture from anywhere else.

A leg broke off when we moved too.

Wouldn't buy any more of it.

In Whatatane though?

True, but for Whakatane so would Bin Inn.

I knew I'd get a comment like that, hence erring on the side of caution with the "disclaimer"!

Good news but the reality is that it will probably take at least two - three years to open by the time they secure land, resource consent, negotiate with the nimbys and then build it.
I went to Ikea for the first time last year in Brisbane and was actually surprised at the quality. It was far better than I expected. I was expecting freedom ‘quality’ which is overpriced crap but ikea seemed better.

This is excellent news. I expect it's taken so long due to vested interests actively blocking any attempts to let Ikea become established here. Hopefully they'll be able to follow through. I expect the same is true for Aldi and other popular companies in other market segments.

This is the upside of increased immigration. Suddenly competition becomes viable as you have sufficient customers to make importing a variety of things worthwhile.

Once the store location has been confirmed I'll do a quick calculation to see if it's worth flying there and paying to courier my stuff home, or flying to Ikea in Oz and hand carrying things back. Going to be an expedition either way.

Some of the speculation in this thread might be a bit premature.

According to Wikipedia their flat pack furniture is made of particle board. Not sure if it's overall any better than the rest of what's out there.

Toilet rolls more like.

As for the warranties, well we already have the CGA here.
