I’m completely content with the non-plumbed ice maker built into our freezer, and I note the fridge/freezer we’ve bought has the same. No plumbing required, none of the hassles you’ve written of with large lumps of ice forming, less to go wrong, takes up hardly any interior space... It just works... as long as people remember to fill it!

I saw the c. 400l Panasonic fridge/freezer has a non-plumbed water dispenser, so just a matter of filling a removable reservoir. It takes up little space, so I’d be happy with that approach. My kids, on the other hand, would want one like my in-laws had, with sodastream built in as well as cold water and ice!
