And another gem from the Casa de Cowboy:

The magical Levitating Flue! Lets smoke out and water in, all at the same time without ever functioning as a flue!

Handle9:

Yeah. I do have to laugh when people complain about houses being buit better "back in the day". So much dodgy stuff used to go on.

Suvivorship bias, what we're seeing is the ones that haven't fallen down, or apart, or been subject to compulsory demolition notices, or turned into superfund sites.

And now the inside view of the area that started this thread:

They somehow managed to find insulation that, as manufactured (this stuff hasn't been compressed), is 30-40mm thick. Must be at least, oh, I dunno, R0.5 or so.

And now for a completely different house, specifically the wardrobe in the master bedroom. It starts off a bit dodgy:

Wardrobe to the left, the darker section is the hanging door, not attached at the bottom in any way. Then the other side:

Just some acrylic filler slapped into place and painted over. But the real cowboying is only apparent if you look behind the scenes:

That's the back side of the facade from the previous two photos, just a piece of 2x4 nailed onto the wall, a pine plank down the sides, and a piece of pre-primed moulding tacked across the top. It's technically a framed wardrobe in the sense that something or someone got framed, but still...

Yep, it's good to drop the idea that just cos the job was paid for it will be 'professional'.

This sliding bathroom door was already in place when we bought this place.

Notice the gap at the bottom between the door and frame is 0 mm and at the top is 15 mm. It's like the spirit level was for drinking not using.

This is a standard failure mode for builders I think:

Perhaps an error of a fraction of a degree in setting the track is magnified hugely once the doors are hung?

Same at our place, plus some other little beauties as well. Spouting that doesn't drain to the downpipe. Toilet cistern where the overflow drain was higher than the flushing handle so that the overflow, when it eventually happened, came out all over the floor via the flushing handle aperture, outside wall of kitchen with a 20mm bow. This is all stuff from when it was built not some bodgey home hanyman renovations.

Really ? That's evil in its brilliance, like some kind of long life time bomb.

Evil, probably, brilliant no, just lazy ineptitude, time bomb for sure.

I figured out what likely happened. With the cistern cover removed i could see an unused set of holes in the wall matching the mounting holes in the cistern. I suspect the hockey stick pipe between the cistern and the toilet bowl had been cut too short so the cistern was lowered slighly to allow the pipe to fit. The overflow hole in the wall had already been made so now the overflow pipe sloped uphill from the cistern to the wall outlet. Duh.

Had the electrician in today to look at a few changes that needed doing before putting in the solar. I'd never looked at the Meanwell DIN rail mount power supply too closely, but when I did:

It's a MeanW... MeanW.... MeanW/T/F.

They've peeled back a bit more of the wall now, the builder reckons what they did there was take standard batts and split them in half, so covered twice the area with the same quantity of batts.
