I disagree about not charging a callout.
A business doing many small jobs like the OP's breaker replacement won't be viable unless you do.
Boy sparky tells me that there's an issue with too many cowboys, probably no public liability insurance, not complying with OSH regs, etc etc - doing jobs on the cheap.

"Walking away" from jobs that aren't commercially viable is common. If someone is doing those jobs at the price, then there's a problem.

$100 is not atypical for 1-hour minimum charge, with extra hours charged at ~70.

You should be able to get a kW value out of the meter, either by an actual kW figure on the meter, or by counting the flashes and doing maths.

Why what?

$100 minimum charge? The sparky is probably paid ~$35-50. There's office time to generate and check the invoice and check it's been paid, and follow up when it hasn't. You can't fit 8x "one-hour" calls into an 8-hour day; there's travel time etc. Van, insurance, etc. too.

I think plumbers are more-or-less the same.

A service electrician doing these kinds of calls is also likely to be on the higher end of the competency and pay scale, compared to someone bashing out new builds or floor fitouts.

I think he was probably replying to me about the second point. Yeah that is true re getting the kW value out of the meter.
