I have never used the self-cleaning function on my oven, so this thread has motivated me to have a look at the handbook to see how it works.

From what I just read, it sounds like it takes at least three hours, consumes a huge amount of electricity, and generates a scary amount of heat.

Is it not easier to just spend ten minutes cleaning the thing manually? What am I missing?

I've done both and prefer pyro clean.  Not even close.  It's turned oven cleaning from a job we both hate and avoid (pay someone else to do) to something routine, more effective and easy.

What could be easier than pulling out the racks (which you need to do to clean the oven the old way), pushing a few buttons.  No nasty caustic chemicals, associated personal safety risks and smelly residue in the oven no matter how carefully you clean.  No material impact on the power bill.  Possibly cheaper than using Mr Muscle.

The heat is well managed by a fan pulling air between the panes in the door.  I don't find it scary.

BTW we don't stand and watch the oven clean itself for three hours.  We leave it to do its thing.

Not answer the question but related.

I have a Beko standalone oven with induction hob that's about 8 years old. It works fine, but next time I would go for the Bosch - I've had only good experiences with Bosch products in general but haven't used their stoves. There's nothing really wrong with it I can put my finger on, just basics like the back behind the hobs isn't well designed, half the shelves in the oven have the nice sliders but half don't, and a Bosch isn't that much more expensive. If budget is an issue then the Beko is fine.

We put a built in Beko oven into our last house and loved it. Feature rich and excellent value.

I much preferred it to the Siemens (Bosch) freestanding oven we have now.

We updated our kitchen last year and decided on the same model Bosch you have linked to (also installed a Bosch induction cooktop).

Oven was made in Germany and cooktop was made in Spain.

Oven replaced a 'Shacklock' from 2002 which was very reliable. We use our oven a lot.

The Bosch is silent and heats up to whatever temp you choose in 4-5 minutes. Also takes a long time to cool down - So very well insulated.

We found that compared to the old oven, it seems a bit smaller inside - I imagine this is the insulation factor and probably the same for any newer products.

We had to change a couple of our old trays to fit the new oven.

Controls are easy to use and clear to see.

I looked at a Miele very similar to the one you have linked to - the thing that immediately put me off was the pop out black plastic knob. First thing I though is that will get warm and the plastic will dry out and after a few years it will crack. It seemed very tacky. Couldn't believe for a premium product they couldn't have spent another 50c and at least put something metallic on it. As petty as that sounds it made me choose the Bosch.

Some of the talk over where the products are made is a bit of snobbery in my view. There are many 'European' products that are built in China and many European built products that contain mostly Chinese made components. Europe has a few large companies that also built very cheap and poor quality products. A good company will have good Quality Control and  *should* ensure similar quality no matter where it is built.

Thanks for the input - our current oven takes 15 mins to heat up to 150deg so that alone would be a massive improvement, and the Bosch is much bigger inside than our current model so again another improvement. No issues with the spinny ring or the touch controls?

Ah - the spinny ring....

The touch controls are fine. No problem there.

We actually did have a problem with the spinny ring. The oven was installed as part of the rennos, then the floor was sanded.

Fine dust got in it and it wasn't working well at all.

But it was actually ok, because that metal ring thing just pulls out (quite easily as it happens), and you give the path where it runs a wipe and blow out the dust and it was all good again. It is actually in the manual about cleaning it once in a blue moon if required.

So the only real annoyance with the ring is when you are setting the timer. The timer starts off showing every second for the first minute, then finally goes to whole minutes.

So the first few spins are getting the first minute out of the way then the timers starts racing up. Just seems stupid to me that they have the first 1-60 seconds as a timer you would set. It's not really a user problem at all. Just seems slightly silly to me as I dont ever want to set the timer for less than a minute! Don't let that put you off.

I also had the stainless steel version of that Bosch oven in my previous house. It was great, and I specced the same model for the new house I'm building without any reservations. It was only after I sold that house that I realised I hadn't even been using the 'quick heat up' function, it already heated up very quickly without it.
The controls did take a little bit of getting used to, mainly because the ring dial can be a bit hard to turn, but once I got used to them it was fine.

Thanks for the updates, just the info I was looking for. The Bosch Series 8 is looking appealing, will go and look in person again before ordering.

We recently redid our Kitchen and my wife put in two of the Bosch ovens of the model you are looking at - so far they have been excellent - haven’t used the pyro function yet as they are still so new. No issues with the ring at this stage. Can confirm they are made in Germany (very prominent on the sticker inside the oven)

Great, another vote of confidence! Where did you find the best deal price wise, or did you get a lot of items all as a bundle? We have seen some variety in pricing.

We had Miele oven and induction hob at last house, was at least 5 yrs old when we moved in.. Miele continued to provide warranty parts only, support.. I was impressed. Loved the pryrolitic self cleaning and the fast to heat feature as well as the integrated top microwave / convection combo.

Have moved into a house with a F&P twin oven, ok.. and hob ceramic / thermal .. I hate it compared to induction.. house had no extractor so looking to upgrade kitchen and appliances , helpful thread

We upgraded from cheap no-name ceramic hob to the Bosch Series 8 Induction and it is a game changer.

I am about to start a reno and replacing my terrible Electrolux oven with two NEFF ovens - the next line above Bosch. If you are in Auckland, and interested in Bosch, I _highly_ recommend you go to Unserhaus in Parnell, which is the Bosch/NEFF/Gaggenau display/demo location. The staff there are really knowledgeable. They didn't push me up to the NEFF range; I got there entirely on my own :)

Nothing beats being able to see these things in person and push all the buttons!

We've had the Electrolux EVE614DSD Pyro Oven for almost a year and would recommend it. The temperature seems quite accurate and consistent, it's quick to heat up (there's a rapid heat mode), the glass (4 layers) doesn't get too hot and you can push in the control dials to avoid accidentally turning one. My criticisms of it is would be that the temperature 'dial' is not a dial, it's basically just a toggle that you turn a bit to the left or right to turn the temperature up or down, and that when you change oven modes the temperature automatically goes back to 170 degrees. So if you use rapid heat to pre-heat the oven to 220 for example, then switch to bake, you have to set it back to 220 again.

Ideally I'd love a proper dial so it's quicker to set the temperature, although reading this tread, as robjg63 said, spinning dials can have issues. And it would be nice if it remembered the temperature but in all the main areas for the oven to do its job very well, this certainly impressed us.

Bosch oven here, with pyro cleaning, it is now slightly over 10 years old.

Pyro cleaning only works on some of the internal surfaces that are designed for it, we don't really use it, oven doesn't get too dirty anyway.

Had two issues,  oven overheated melting an internal plastic air vent, and oven went into an error mode .   Technician couldn't say whether it needed new control board (very expensive) or thermostat (apparently it was impossible to know for sure), we risked $200 on a new thermostat and fingers crossed it fixed the problem.... thankfully it solved the issue but very annoying that a bosch service person couldn't diagnose the exact fault.

Other issue is that the fan has become a bit loud....not that bad though,  and doesn't affect performance.

But, its been a good oven.

Def. recommend the easy glide sliding racks.

Just a quick update. We ended up with the new Bosch Series 6 (model HBG5780B0). Went for this over the Series 8 previously mentioned for a few reasons:

  • it was in stock and we picked up same day vs waiting an unknown time for stock to maybe come in
  • not a fan of touch controls (on the 8) and the 6 has "standard" knobs
  • internal dimensions the same between 6 and 8
  • the 8 has two telescopic rails but they are fixed, the 6 has comes with one but it can be moved, and additional sets can purchased
  • it was over $1,000 cheaper with the deal we got

Initial impressions are we are very impressed. Heats up quickly, is very quiet, lots more space inside, better window to look through etc.

Thanks for all the advice and experience sharing.

Our boshe oven was never that great, had a problem where the cooling fan sometimes didn't switch off after using it. . Mieles ovens just works. Not bells and whistles, very basic, so less to break.
