Yeah.  The dish drawer soap compartment was completely emptied within seconds of hitting start on a normal wash

I added some powder to both the A and B sections above and the B section was immediately emptied (I could hear the water flushing through the front of the machine) whereas the A section was barely touched; maybe some water splashed on it.

I have an F&P Dishwasher and normally use the fast 30min cycle.

According to the manual, the fast cycle doesn’t do a pre rinse so there would be no point in doubling up on powder.

This could be the case for other makes and cycles.

Actually my model is as below, the one above was just from the first result on google

It doesn't seem to say what the section on the left hand side is for

Referenced already in this thread but useful to mention again. The guy in the video does a followup video in which he initially aplogises for advising that you fill up the compartments full with detergent (as the detergent manufacturers recommend) when it's not necessary but then an analysis of the powders versus tablets versus gel capsules and how fast do they dissolve or not. It's very informative (if you're interested in that sort of thing)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll6-eGDpimU&t=0s

His evidence is that gel packs do not slow down the dissolving of detergent in the wash as some people think as a way to add rinse aid to the final cycles and the colours are purely cosmetic. Note I don't recall ever seeing multi-colour dishwasher gel packs in NZ but of course plenty of washing machine gel packs.

The conclusion of all this is, it's a useful video and if following his advice helps your wash, then that's good.   If it hasn't changed your washing process then nothing is lost either.

But I do find two conclusions he makes quite compelling.

1. Don't bother rinsing your dishes beforehand unless they are really nasty and then just rinse off the debris. The DW will do a much better job than you will

2. DW save water over hand washing and save time. He jokingly responds to one person saying "I can do the dishes in 30 minutes versus 1 hours for DW" Maybe so, but when you are washing the dishes by hand that's all you are doing. If the machine is taking an hour you can be any number of other useful tasks like watching the latest Netflix video, videos like this on YT or any other manner of useful tasks :-) He does make this comment somewhat tongue in cheek but it does resonate.

We've got an Asko dishwasher which is probably 10+ years old. After reading this thread in full I went and had a look and sure enough it has a second compartment under the flippy lid that has holes (where people on this thread say you're supposed to put powder for the pre-rinse cycle). We've never done this as we've never noticed it was there...

We barely rinse our dishes before loading the washer. At most we just remove solid scraps but often the plates will have salad and sauce remnants etc. We just load it up with powder (generally a cheaper brand or whatever is on special) and our dishes have always come out spotless. We do use rinse aid.

I think it very much depends on the quality of the dishwasher itself. With previous dishwashers (F&P from memory) we haven't always got a consistent result like this.

When we did use tables, we would break them in half as we found we didn't need so much detergent.

We prefer powder as we can control the quantity of powder per wash.

After watching most of both video clips, We'll start adding some powder to the pre-wash compartment.

Our Westinghouse dishwasher has a tablet button on it. Adds a few minutes to the cycle. Think it works correctly..

From Consumer today Dishwasher detergents | Compare - Consumer NZ

Dud detergents: some powder dishwasher detergents clean only marginally better than water

A Consumer NZ test of 23 dishwasher detergents has found that some dishwasher powders don’t clean your dishes significantly better than a cycle with plain water.

The test looked at 16 tablet options and seven powder products, testing against washing with just water. The detergents were tested with four washes on six commonly stuck on food grimes which included egg yolk, rice starch, baked-on cheese, red wine, coffee, and minced meat.

“Our testing has consistently found tablets and capsules perform better than powders. While powders are cheaper per wash and there’s some level of control over the dose, they still don’t clean dishes well. The powder is messy to add to the dispenser and people can get the dosage wrong”, said Consumer NZ test content team leader James le Page.

Powders also often don’t contain rinse aid, an additive that helps water spread evenly over the surface of dishes to reduce spots and hasten drying.

Consumer NZ test results

In the dishwasher detergent test, tablet options came out sparkling. Two Finish products took out the top spot. Finish Quantum Ultimate Pro Lemon Sparkle ($20 for 32 tablets) and Finish Quantum Ultimate Pro Fresh Burst ($15.99 for 32 tablets) were both recommended and scored 80 – the highest in the test. However, performance comes with a higher price, and both products average at 63 cents a tablet.

Active Ultimate Citrus Zest ($10 for 30 tablets) was a close runner up scoring 79 and Active Rapid Lemon ($10 for 30 tablets) scored 77. They also are Consumer NZ recommended products. Performing well, Active provides good value for money at 33 cents a tablet.

Two of the powders received a ‘Don’t Buy’ warning in our tests. These were Green Goddess Citrus Dish Wash Powder ($17.95 for 1kg) which scored 15 and Will&Able ecoDish Powder ($11.99 for 1.5kg) which scored 36. They both performed poorly at removing most food stains. The water only cycle scored 9 overall for all stains.

Consumer NZ also assessed safety information provided on the packaging. Almost all products provided critical safety information on the packaging regarding general product safety, first aid advice and poisons centre contact details. Green Goddess Citrus Dish Wash powder’s first aid advice and poisons centre information was notably absent.

Consumer NZ encourages businesses to print the contact number of the National Poisons Centre (0800) POISON on its packaging. The helpline provides medical advice 24/7 in the case detergent is ingested, gets into eyes or has contact with skin.

I would suggest they are not using the pre-wash section with either powders and tablets :)

And I tend to agree - if not using prewash the tablets do a better job, likely due to higher concentration than anything else.

DonH:

The detergent drawers 1n my F&P dishdrawers have small posts in them which prevent putting tablets in them. I haven't noticed any difference in effectiveness between powder and tablets.

I've never used tablets because powder + rinse aid gets the dishes perfectly clean, as good as or better than a hand wash.

It's a Youtube video, "we lit the fuse, stood back far enough that most of the debris would miss us but it'd still look impressive, and it went bang" is the methodology that applies there, particularly if you can replay the goes-bang part in slow motion from several angles.

errr I rinse off so the foodscraps wont block up the dishwasher.   and I just chuck the tablet into the dishwasher, landing wherever it may... seems fine :P

F&P dish drawers, if that makes any difference.

I've been wanting to try this for months since seeing this video and the follow ups hut still haven't managed to get through the bulk load of tablets we got last time. The science of what he's saying makes complete sense, of course soap in both washes will help get the dishes clean.

The real key however is don't block the spinning blades, that's what really ruins your wash as it just stops the water reaching your dishes.

I've found a few of his videos pretty good though, informative enough to understand how things work without going too far in to the deep science of it to lose my interest or understanding.
