My friend is building a small house on his section for his son, which he designed and drew up himself and is also doing the project management on as he did on his own house years earlier. From the get go they planned on using plywood instead of gib. I think they're at the painting stage now.

Interesting what kind of finish do you get on plywood?

what do you mean? you sand and seal with either polyurethane or paint. plywood comes in different surface grading so you can pick the one that suits

Mate has done his house with ply, clear coat and black negative detailing. It looks really good.

Is it not prone to bowing?

It's been up two years now, I haven't seen any signs of bowing - still looks like when it first went up.

My son's been wanting aqualine for his bathroom reno for ages too. At the moment it's sitting there after he ripped everything out.

The one good thing about the supply shortage is it makes gives alternatives look better (especially greener alternatives)

Same could be said for rising fuel prices but tell that to my wallet :-( (having said that I just bought a hybrid two weeks ago)

its fixed in a similar pattern to how gib is, its unlikely to bow.

the problem is can it be used as bracing or just as a lining?

Seems to be harder than gib - you need tools to cut it and you can screw directly into it without having to find a stud. Also water repellent but I don't know how it compares to aqualine. I suspect better.

Nice bit of work I must say! Who's the son's friend?

Bung:Alternative brands came a cropper getting approval as bracing.

i wonder why that was..

Because of the branz scam that is why things cost so much to get done here.

Not if you use the right thickness (several available).

Below is our sleepout that I lined in 9mm ply (from memory) which is fairly rigid and it certainly hasn't bowed. It's at our bach so I wanted a solution that is easy to work with that I could just trim to length and screw in place quickly, without having to make multiple trips down there to install, plaster, sand, paint etc etc.

I think it came out pretty good and is in keeping with the vibe that I was going for. I have bought some near-clear polyurethane to roll over it next time we are down there.

I installed half or quarter rounds at all the corners to finish it off. That was probably the hardest part - my woodworking skills aren't amazing but I think I did ok - example is below.

You can choose to counter-sink the screws and fill in the holes with wood coloured putty. I am still on the fence about that.

Another nice thing about ply, if you're not worried about the final finish or are willing to skim coat it, is that you can use it for walls where you're planning to attach a lot of stuff. The network cupboard in the Casa is lined with ply instead of gib since you can screw anything directly into it without having to worry about lining up studs or using wall anchors.

i lined my garage with is as it likely worked out cheaper (pre covid supply issues). sheets are more expensive but no plaster or paint to worry about and you can easily mount stuff to it.
