They want to put our daily charge up to $3.028 !!! I called this and asked them why this was so high, when i looked up another address in Christchurch, the daily charge was only $1, mine in kaiapoi seems like a scam. They put me on hold and calculated if it would be cheaper for me to go on a low user plan (i knew it wouldn't be as I have all electric heating and an EV) they said mmm nope we can't make this any cheaper for you, sorry.

We're thinking about changing to octopus energy, we'll shift as much as possible to the off peak times.

One thing I never did get around to automating though, which would be nice is our hot water cylinder, so that we can make sure it only heats on the cheaper rate. Is there a smart switch that works with home assistant that I can set up an automation for that will handle the kind of load you see on a hot water circuit?

Kaiapoi is on a different lines company to Christchurch so charges will be different.

This is what makes me mad about those cheaper living facebook groups and whenever people ask what power company to go with.

"Oh my rate is xyz and I think its cheap, you should sign up with the same retailer even though i have no idea where you are!"

Without considering where each retailer has their generation assets and their target customerbase, or how the local lines company charges.

Eg. Meridian has its generation assets in the south island and a retail stronghold in the south island vs Mercury in the north island. Meanwhile trustpower can be a bad choice for anyone outside of tauranga.

Pricing can be totally different once you go into another lines territory or geographic area.

$3 a day is pretty crazy. This switch might be worth considering, it's BLE. Someone posted a WiFi switch a few months back, hopefully someone can find that.
