We just bought ourselves a Coleman Roadtrip LX. Nice looking little unit with deceptively large cooking area and additional cooking plates depending on what you want to do.

I did have a Bodum Charcoal Grill but really it was too much effort for what we want which is to just chuck something on the BBQ quickly from time to time. This one should see us right for a while.

MMM I have always disliked the cheap S/S bbqs because they all seem to use 430 Grade S/S that is more or less just decorative rather than less likely to rust.
If a magnet sticks to it I would rather have a good quality enamel.

joker97: woo hoo the porto is on special!

if you read the specs of the the porto and the serrana which one would you get?
- they're both the same size
- same cooking area
- serrana has smaller wheels and is lighter (more flimsy??)
- serrana has significantly smaller box (more flimsy??)
- serrana has many more burners (more gas use?)
- porto has bazooka flame ???
- same price!!!

what about even heat distribution?

What a timely thread!!

I threw out our gas 4 burner end of summer last year as it had had its life, we were moving house and it wasn't worth the effort, this time around i decided I wanted to try charcoal instead of gas so bought a cheapie Kiwicraft branded charcoal kettle style BBQ from the red shed at a whole $55.20 on special

Once you get past that fact it comes with no instructions and is completely kitset requiring full assembly (its a mans toy so perfect because we don't need instructions and we live to build things useful!!) it is actually very good, very simple but does the job well, it might only last a couple of seasons but at the pricepoint worth a gamble, will never willingly go back to gas bbq again, I had forgotten how good charcoal BBQ is!!!

Its amazing how fast charcoal bbq's are becoming popular here now.

When we moved to NZ 7 years ago I was really disappointed that I could not buy charcoal anywhere. My weber stood in the garage for nearly a year without any use. Back then one could not even buy a charcoal bbq, let alone the charcoal. Boerewors was an unheard of long sausage sold only at a butchery in Tawa.

Eventually I found out that the Mitre 10 in Porirua sold charcoal. It was not the best charcoal and I found it very hard to light. But it was still better than gas.

Now today I can buy charcoal (including the good stuff from Australia and South Africa) nearly anywhere. Even my local Mitre 10 in Kapiti stocks a whole range of Webers bbq's and charcoal. The warehouse and Countdown even sell good charcoal.

Boereworse is also freely available, and I can buy it from the Mad Butcher, Countdown and sometimes even New world. Try some on your next BBQ.

Once your cheapie Kiwicraft is ready for the bin, spend the extra cash and get yourself a Weber. If you look after it well it will last you 20years.

Charcoal BBQ's are the way to go, yes there is more time needed to setup but they will heat for hours which means later on after a nice meal you can toast marshmallows over them.

They also allow you to spend more of your evening outside as they give off a nice amount of heat and light.

Great with friends.

I got a goldair 4 burner for half price at Briscoes. I wasnt too fussed about what bbq I bought cos they all do the same thing...cook food.Its the quality of the cook that counts most but the charcoal burners are nice to have.
