Wheelbarrow01:

Psilan: Well my fan doesn't click at all, and high speed is tolerable even when watching tv.

Matt from Heatstore visited this afternoon and replaced my lower door latch - a vast improvement now with positive feedback when engaging the latch. He also removed the front cover of the fan area and found one of the electrical wires was touching the top of the fan assembly. He says it must have landed that way after transportation to my house. This is why my fan was noisy. There was no damage to the wire so he tucked it out of the way and I've since lit the fire. It's up to full temperature now and I was just listening out for the fan. It's pretty much completely silent on low speed, and very much quieter on high speed. I actually can't hear the low speed at all over the whoosh noise of burning wood now, so I am 100% happy.

Matt told me that after I called them yesterday, Heatstore immediately ordered an entire replacement fan assembly and wiring loom from Masport under warranty, however having now tested it, it appears it won't be required. Matt advised I made the right choice with Masport - he said they have the best after sales and warranty care. He told me about a guy in Kaiapoi whose handle on his 8 year old Masport burner recently broke off. Even though his burner was outside of the warranty period and the spare part was not available, Masport still organised and paid for the handle to be repaired by a welder. It's good to hear such positive anecdotes.

What can I say, I was happy with the fire before, but now I am stoked (nice fire pun there lol).

Yep, service like that is a cost to them, to support you. But the overwhelming factor is the benefit that they will get from their reputation. As the saying goes you get what you pay for, and Masport is a clear leader in that respect

They still shoukld have called it the Saturn V based on the afterburner function, but I hear there is some outfit, somewhere,  that may already have used that name

I don't really like the look of that fire and how it is open at the bottom, as you have to get under and clean it. My current fire is like that and it is a pita to keep clean. I liken how these new masport go all the way to the floor.

I don't know. I guess maybe because they burn so much hotter so maybe more chance of degradation over time? But that is pure speculation on my part. You'd be best to email Masport and ask them I guess.

I'd say because they are a 'new' thing. I have had 2 warranty services so far in the first year. Both hassle free and completed within a few days.

The bottom chamber latch (not requested, but done during a visit) and fan replacement.

The grill bottom chamber intake started falling apart. But I was told I wasn't supposed to take that out for cleaning unless it was the 2 yearly clean-out.

If I didn't take it out I wouldn't have known it was broken though...so...

Hi, noob here. Am I right to assume you can't turn this down to smoulder all night? I've been advised against getting the Ferva Saturn for this reason- I'm in Gisborne and our house is not fully insulated or double glazed, the local expert reckons our house would get cold during the night. But I'm an effete aesthete and want something that looks cool AND heats the house.

Slow burns are not allowed with ULEBs because it makes them inefficient and more environmentally unfriendly.

Usually only rural fires have this type of blocking behavior, or you can modify them illegally (if your area requires high efficiency burners).

Tell that to a rural household when the power is knocked out by bad weather/snow for a number of days...

Having the ability to charge a phone with the wood burner you are cooking on  would be very welcome

You have to plug the fire in to the wall as well.

You may want to look at this one if you aren't in an area that require a ULEB. http://www.masportheating.co.nz/products-1/akaroa-freestanding-radiant-wood-burner-with-ash-pan

Comes with a 10 year Masport warranty, doesn't require power for the fan, as it doesn't need a fan,  and  believe you can adjust it from high to low setting, which I believe you can't do with the mystique. The fire company I went to didn't recommend the mystique for these reasons, and because if you have a powercut for an extended period of time, eg after an earthquake, you then may not be able to use the fire

I did ask masport when they were coming out with a new model of the Mystique, as other brands seem to have a generator built in that powers the fan, but they never got back to me. So I am eitehr going to wait until the next gen, or get the Akaroa, as  I am not in a ULEB zone.

Oh no, I might be wrong. It looks like it takes a while but then it does generate a small amount of electricity.

It is a bit odd and gimmicky that they have got that, and guessing it isn't USB C. But I guess it is potentially a good feature. But probably not a good idea having a phone and battery close to a hot fire.
