What are people's opinions on the washer/dryer combos? We've been looking at the F&P WD8560F1, which can be had for around $1800 on special. Looks good on paper.

Personally I'd prefer to keep them separate, that way if one fails you've still got the other...

In my experience washer dryers do nether job great.

I had one overseas (samsung) used the dryer function twice took forever. My sister inlaw has got a Bosch and stopped using it for the same reason. You also can't use the washing machine for a second load until the first has finished drying.

Yeah he can test the outside tap, and an inside tap which should be lower if there's a PLV. As you say the HWC should always have it's own PLV even the "mains pressure" ones.

Agreed, would prefer separate ones

However the combo is nice if you are short on space, and as the one mentioned is a condensing dryer it doesn't require venting. These are important considerations if you are in a small house or apartment, or renting and can't go cutting a vent hole in the wall. Running a conventional dryer without venting it outside is a terrible thing - makes the place damp and takes forever to get stuff dry.

The other thing about a combo is you can't dry one load while washing the next. People with kids are always wanting to do this over winter.

We just recently went through the exercise of buying a new machine, moving away from the old faithful (broken) F+P top loader. Two young kids. Lots of mess.

Looked at everything out there, ended up with a Electrolux 10kg. Very happy with it.

Be careful of long cycle times - our one has a 60min daily cycle which is good... some take 2-3 hours per cycle which doesn't work with young kids! Ours also has a vapour mode that blows warm vapour (not quite steam) into the wash for 30min at the end of the cycle - great for my business shirts reduces ironing heaps. 1400rpm speed is good, and we found it gets clothes much much cleaner. A 4yr old white dress shirt with collar stains came clean first time ever much to my surprise. Electrolux ticked all the boxes for us, 10kg a great step up from the 5.5kg F+P top loader - cuts down the number of loads, very quiet, much more economical too.

and ended up paying $1399 at Harveys, after they price matched someone down from 1800 odd. Great machine, recommend it.

Just to keep the hijack going for a bit.

I looked at the combos before buying last year. The Samsung in particular had huge cycle times and used a huge amount of water as the condenser in the drying cycle used water as a coolant. I believe they should only be considered if short on space and not for a family.

Back on topic.
I know I made the same comment in the other thread, but if you have a sprung wooden floor, just be aware a front loader will shake the crap out of your house, particularly at high spin speeds.

To revive an old thread....
Does anyone know if the below list of consumer recommend washing machines is up to date. My washing machine has just died and I am suddenly in the market for a front loader :(

No. Top rated model now is an LG.

I suggest that if you value Consumer reviews/ratings and are looking at a $1-3k purchase, then spend a few dollars and subscribe.

A machine may get a better or worse overall rating based on some feature you may or may not care about, member reviews might also be useful.

Just last week we bought a Bosch WAN22120AU - got it for $1023 or something I think, which is a decent price.

I've not used it properly yet haha but wifey reckons it's the best thing since sliced bread. For the price I struggled to find a better option, and the Bosch generally looks to get very positive reviews. It's certainly nice and quiet, and the spin just about dries the clothes - think it does 1100RPM or something.

There is so much marketing fluff though, talk about vari perfect and eco silence and active water and aqua secure...load of nonsense haha why can't they just tell us what it does, not some stupid thing the marketing department have come up with.

I have had my LG for nearly 8 years and it has never missed a beat. I would definitely buy another.

I agree, and since it's a big purchase that is done only once very 7-10 years no-one really knows what is good without others feedback.

I'm probably thinking about at either the WW75J4213IW currently $800 at Smith City
or the Bosch WAN22120AU for ~$1000 from Various places.

Hard to know if a machine is worth an extra 25% more - will it last an extra 2-3 years or break down and need a service call 2 time less over its life?

The repairman who came out to our house earlier in the week recommended LG, Samsung and Bosch.
I'd add Meile to that list if it was not for the huge price jump!

Any advise received is welcome and appreciated.

We had to buy a new washing machine in October last year, the top loader that we'd had for 15 years died.

These 3 made out shortlist (all available from Harvey Norman). Out family consists of 2 adult's and 2 school kids under 10

AEG 8kg 6 Series Front Loading Washing Machine (LF6E8431A)

LG 9kg Front Loading Washing Machine (WTW1409VCW)

Electrolux 9kg Front Loading Washing Machine (EWF14933)

We liked the AEG, but the premium it carried over the others was a bridge to far.

That left the LG & the Electrolux.

The Electrolux one has many of the same features as the AEG, but for a cheaper price (AEG own Electrolux, or have the same parent, can't remember). That coupled with the fact the wife didn't warm to the LG, meant the Electrolux is the one we went for.

We're in a house with wooden floors, and it doesn't shake the house at all, and it's quiet, you can hear it a little during the spin cycle, but overall it is much, much quieter than the old Top loader.
