Wolf555:

antonknee do they still guarantee the first year of savings?  I can't see it on their website.

edit: nvm it's in their FAQ.  Definitely leaning towards EK over Flick now as surely can't go wrong...

Yep, you found the details - for the benefit of others interested: Guaranteed Savings

And to answer your question, yes I'm on Stay Ahead 200. The Loyal Kiwi plan didn't make any difference to rates for my address, and it's no skin off my nose to be in credit with Electric Kiwi - and well worth it for that 10% bonus.

The great thing about EK is if you switch, and you find you don't like it, they don't have any contracts - so you can leave at any time. And if you did happen to leave, you would also be eligible for other power companies' acquisition bonus offers ๐Ÿ˜‰

For anyone following this thread & my taking it slightly off-topic (sorry) I've ruled out Powershop now simply because they keep ringing me and that's a straight away no from me.  Literally leaving messages asking me to ring them back even though all I did was send them a bill and ask them to compare (which they did).

Still waiting to hear back from Electric Kiwi & Flick, but my calculations have me at this currently:

Comparing Flick Fixie and Electric Kiwi Stay Ahead 200, they both work out exactly the same ($1 difference over a year) if I take into account the 10% discount for the $200 top ups AND a $50 referral code for EK.

So adding on top of that whatever I can save with the Hour of Power it definitely seems EK is the way to go and based on this thread no one seems to really be under 10% savings using their HOP so EK seems to save me just over $100 compared to Flick and compared to my current provider I should save minimum $375/year (assuming 10% HOP).

So again sorry for taking this thread slightly off topic but hopefully this helps someone else out and thanks for getting me to change companies and save some money.

@wolf555

No worries mate, glad you sorted yours out as well. I do however think most gzers will be quite good at managing the free hour with fancy automation etc so for an average Joe I read somewhere between 5-10% savings with the free hour in off peak.

I was surprised this thread got to four pages!

But some valuable stuff discussed and I'm sure it will benefit other GZers looking at power options just like you.

Just an aside given all the power related knowledge in here.

Do any of the comparison sites let you manually enter information? I can't seem to find a way of telling any of them I used X much at this price, and X much at this price, They all want you to pick a plan to get the tariffs and none of them show the plan/rates we are actually on, making them 100% useless to try and actually find a cheaper option.

We have been with EK since early April.

The app suggests 21% avg HOP, 65.8% best HOP (early on in house ownership, boosted that one hour hard..don't think we'll ever get it this high now)

On the web portal - for the 40 days or so of being with EK, we'ved saved 26.6% on HOP.

Definitely jealous of the 65.8% best HOP... 21% average is pretty great too.

Really amazed at how quick and easy it was to flick over.

Filled out the form last night and have received a communication from powershop that they are just finishing up the final read.

When I did the sums based on the last 30 days it worked out about the same as powershop excluding the free hour of power and 10% discount for paying $200 in advance also not accounting for the fact that powershops prices increase a lot in winter.

So should see a decent saving.

Has anyone here managed to get daily rates lower than what's displayed on the website? Their daily rate on Stayahead is about $0.20 more than powershop...

@brownie112 I wouldn't worry too much about that (also - Powershop is more expensive for me, $1.035 / day vs 90c / day with EK). I suspect that you'll save by either joining EK or Flick compared to Powershop anyway. Just upload a Powershop bill.

Fair enough, yea you may be right.

Actually I think you are on 0.9 because you may not be on the stay ahead 200 plan?

Don't forget to account for that bonus 10% with Stay Ahead when looking at the daily rate - will make it effectively cheaper.

Note also if you're looking at a low user plan, the daily rate (after any discounts/bonuses etc and GST) is set by legislation so won't vary much from company to company.

Thank you, Yes that makes sense.

Just found out that the meter readings will always be one or two days behind so the app will not be displaying power usage in real time.

Does that mean if I want to get a reasonably accurate information about how much power I used in that hour, I could always just walk outside write down the meter reading at the start and end of the free hour and get the usage info that way?

@brownie112 will be the same with Powershop too (being a few days behind). Just be patient, work out your use and go from there once the app updates.

Youโ€™re really thinking too hard into it ๐Ÿ˜Š
