Been thinking if a leaf diverter was installed on the culprit down pipe in my situation, the leaves will still fall into the gutter, run towards the down pipe and block the down pipe entry, so very few leaves would make it down to the catcher. My problem is the meeting point of gutter and down pipe, so the entry source is what needs attention, and so far the sponge idea, or mesh seems the most effective as it would keep the gutters clear. Probably the leaf diverter works for a situation where there are not so many leaves.

Someone needs to invent a leaf sucker with an extendable shepherds crook thingy so you can stand on the ground and hook over the gutter and vacuum.

Or invent gutter outlets with larger holes.

Already done. The hardest part is getting a tube big and strong enough but still lightweight.

Another solution I've seen online is a gutter that flips down to either dump the leaves or get hosed out.

One of the neighbours at the beach has just put a transportable house on his section. Apparently it was designed for snow, it has commercial sized gutters and 110mm downpipes. You'd need a dead goose to block that up.

I recommend an arborist. We were able to shift a lot of the issue away and the tree is in very good shape.

As for the gutters, confirm no easy fix. Have tried foam, whiskers, installed mesh. These all take work to clean and keep working and inevitably become part of problem. Tried, removed.

I have good access, so for here the best solution is arborist and frequent cleaning. Get a nice ladder, I wish mine was nicer.

There was an outfit in Australia that made metal overhang gutters - it used surface tension and would shed the leaves. I can't see anyone selling anything similar now. A shame, I still really want this Aussie Beyond-2000 high tech gutter system, it looked like the future.

duckDecoy: Did you know they have a new screen out that retrofits onto the old Leaf Eater boxes? I'm about to order one.  https://rainharvesting.com.au/products/rain-heads/clean-shield-screen-leaf-eater/It replaces the two original outer and inner screens with the single outer screen that is made of the fine mesh.  According to them it 'vibrates' a bit when water hits it and helps shake the leaves off better than the old outer screen.

@duckDecoy I did not know that : ). They are not on the Mitre10 NZ site. Maybe they have them in store. I'd like to see them in NZ and confirm it's the same fit.

Agreed. A good trim is part of the plan. Nothing grows easily up here except this tree which must have found an underground water source that’s feeding it. Lowering its height will make some difference.
One of those tricky ladders that work on slopes is also in the plan but the ones I’ve seen are quite heavy.

I rang the rain harvesting company and they said it is likely to be a special order at the hardware shop, i.e. you order it from them and they send away for it.  Part number RHAC01.  RRP $21

This one came up in Google ads. I've since watched several YouTube videos where they measure various aspects. Looks interesting: https://www.eaveswatersystem.com/eaves-story/

I found it on Bunnings web marked special order and ordered in store. Decided to order as I wanted spares for ease of maintenance. A week later I have them. Physically they are exactly the same as the ones I have already. Not terribly expensive so I'll just live with this as a maintenance cost. I needed spares so thanks for letting me know about this : ).

Looks good but......

I'd like to see what happens when leaves are coming down the roof along with the water. They conveniently don't show that. I suspect the leaves will "stick" to the surface when it's wet and flow with the water into the spouting. Admittedly this will block a good proportion of the leaves but I reckon there'll be enough leaves that will need to be cleaned out and then how do you gain access to the spouting to remove them?

Good questions, I'd like to know. On the plus side it eliminates windfall. It looks continuous so probably the remainder getting in if any will reach a filter outlet or hose out easily once in a while. But yeah I'd like to know more about that aspect.

Can anyone recommend a lightweight ladder that women can use that can double as extensions to put a plank between to clear gutters and paint outside and inside. I've seen a few but lifted up only two of them whilst still inside the plastic Werners was okay the other one who's name escapes me was just to heavy for me to move around. Also to be able to lock and unlock the ladder into different modes would be handy as well. I am of medium build and short without the Popeye arm muscles so do need to be able to move it around without bashing the crap out of the walls. Needs to be stable so if there are any men or women out there who can recommend one that would be great.

I've got one similar to this which I find pretty good. It came with fittings that allow you to make two sets of steps which you can place planks on.

By this I take it you mean the Werners one?
