Cutting outlets in ply is a pain tho. I also want to recess my lower ones in half the sheet thickness so they do not protrude past the front of the sheet and I have screwed up twice with the router doing it. I think I need to make a template or buy one of those adjustable jigs to do it. Since I am painting it, nothing that some car bog and a sand cant fix up tho.

This... sounds like something that shouldn't be that hard, just run a rebate bit around the edges. Is there some gotcha I'm missing?

(Not a criticism, but trying to learn from others).

I use a holesaw - two circles the right size and spacing and a power point fits easy. It's slightly more effort than just hacking a hole with a gib saw, but no requirement for mucking around with flush boxes makes up for it.

Try this company , may have better availability

I gave these guys an email in regards to their aqua smart product and they replied with the following:

There are no store with stock in your area.

We are currently estimating our lead time to be August and we are not accepting orders for a month in an attempt for us to get on top of outstanding orders.

So no chances here unfortunately, was worth a try

Probably cutting the hole to begin with, in the right place. I know some people just score and edge with a blade and freehand it, but even with my light battery trim router, it's too easy to slip and go beyond what the face plate can hide.

Having said that I'm getting much better the more I use it, using it for recessing door hinges and strike plates.

A jig / oversized rectangle as a guide would make this a 15s job.

If you do enough of this kind of thing you could probably DIY it with four bits of Aliexpress 2020 track and four 90-degree connectors that you could adjust to create whatever size square/rectangle you needed. It'd be a square hold in timber jig, so you could have a good square hole in timber whenever you felt like it.

Probably needs an acronym to make it less of a mouthful.

So, if you used ply in place of Gib, for the interior of a home (renovation), you'd need to skim as well to get a good finish for painting?

Does anyone have any photos of a plastered/skimmed home interior, painted, for reference? Would it likely cost significantly more to have someone plaster/skim interior as opposed to gib?

Sorry, these are possibly dumb questions, I just don't really have anyone else to ask :)

You would need thick ply to get the rigidity of gib at 9.5mm or 10mm. And you would need to prepare the ply to be plastered as it wont meld as well as gib does.

Im not sure what the deal with gib is, I had my sparky around today, gib is made in NZ. And builders are held up doe to lack of gib, why is that??

My sparky Chris, mentioned that. Building boom, cant get gib, but its made here. Has it all torn to AKL as they are more important? If that was the case the clickbait media would be all over that. Maybe it is a monopoly issue, hold back, prices rise, release it?

AFAIK the building boom isnt a 50% increase just like that.

If you use ply you would use it for its decrotive wood grain finish not plaster it.  Its more expensive than plasterboard (2x to 3x for a matching size sheet)  and does not have tethered edges for joining sheets together.

In regards to cost to skim, unless you have good reasons to remove the plasterboard (like wall insulation or removing ugly pinex ceilings) then skimcoating would be a much better idea.  Wellington based, to skim approx 7 rooms (origional walls) and gibstop all new plasterboard ceilings to square stop finish cost 12.5k incuding GST, and included oil based sealer.  We removed all wallpaper, but for you that may not be necessary.  They painted too but that was a seperate price

EDIT: it would cost significatly more to replace with gib, think new arcitraves, new skirting, labour to remove current gib, installing new stuff, gib stopped.  Its more about what you are trying to achieve, structural vs decrotive

For a house, you would do it because you like the look (this is a particularly nice example; it's actually over gib but can go directly on frames):

Plywood will never be as smooth and even as gib. And I think skim coat over plywood would likely fall out as the wood grain will expand and contract a tiny amount as humidity changes.

Huh that's an interesting idea, I happen to have a bunch of that aluminium extrude and the nuts and bolts - just need some 90degree parts.
