As someone that uses an oven, I'm still perplexed why people would want an air fryer.

I would say in defense of that, my oven is relatively modern. I have been toying with the idea of getting a sous vide combi oven (I notice they all seem to have an air fry function).

It’s just a small oven with a high velocity convection fan.

We use the airfryer for doing small bits and pieces like a few roast potatoes and the oven for biger cooks like a roast or sheet pan meals.

We could get by without our airfryer but it’s useful for what we use it for.

Quite simply because it's up to heat and ready to go in seconds, rather than 10-20 minutes. Heating up leftover pizza in the oven takes ages, waiting for it to pre-heat. The microwave is fast, but it makes it soggy. The air fryer takes maybe 5-6 minutes from go to woah, and the end result is pretty indistinguishable from fresh.

This is from the perspective of someone who is terminally lazy and intolerant of wait times when it comes to preparing food.

I am the guy that will sometimes have jam on bread because waiting for toast to cook takes too long.

An air fryer is also heating a very small volume compared to an oven so there is so much less wasted energy and far quicker to heat up.

I wasn't convinced by baskets etc knowing it's just a very windy oven. So ours is a traditional oven shape with wire trays and a rotisserie basket thing that can slot in if you take all the trays out.

Our use case is quick reheats or small quantities of food for

kids lunch boxes

Or anything we actually want crispy because it's so much easier with the high airflow .

I think this was discussed in the Technology Connections video, but a lot of convection oven manufacturers are now marketing their ovens as 'Air Fryers' to get into the Air Fryer craze. But some are nowhere nears as a good or fast.

Anyone know much about teflon/PTFE coating? Think i went down a rabbit hole reading up on it.

I enquired with Ninja regarding one of their air fryers and they have come back with this.

Is this good or bad? Standard for air fryers or on the better end?

The crisper plate and basket are made from carbon steel and feature a non-stick coating. This coating ensures easy food release and makes cleaning a breeze. Additionally, our Ninja Airfryers main cooking basket is free from PFOA and Teflon, but it does contain PTFE in the Nano Ceramic Non-Stick Coating. In order to maintain the nonstick cookware in good condition, avoid heating up it above 260°C.

Yeah, I think it’s very difficult to find many (if any) air fryers that don’t use some form of non-stick coating.

I’m finding the same with rice cookers (ie, finding one that doesn’t have a non-stick bowl): we have a large rice cooker we’ve had for over twenty years that has an aluminium bowl. Cleans up perfectly every time. Doubt a ‘non-stick’ cooker can do that without losing its coating. (But I’m assuming there are many that still have negative associations with aluminium which puts companies off using it?; I also assume it would not be suitable for an air fryer...)

there is some interesting info around. typically with frying pans because you burn food and that makes the coating come off, and you ingest it. the health effects of that i don't know of, or if its really been studied.

it seems most of these sorts of Appliances have these non stick coatings. My rice cookers coating actually started coming off and got the bowl replaced under warranty. But it seems all these coatings wear off even if well looked after and only using cloth to clean it

We tried a cheap basket air fryer ,  it started flaking non stick coating day one.

I'd forgotten that was another reason why we went one with wire racks in the end no cancer coating in contact with the food.

Totally. I've known this to happen to many others with non-stick rice cookers, which is why I don't want to go down that line. (We use it a couple of times a week - I'd hate to think how many non-stick bowls we'd have gone through in the same 22 year period!)

It's not a bad business model using a product that's nearly sure to fail within a short period; and while some will indeed get components replaced under warranty (or CGA) or buy new parts later, ultimately that is probably a small proportion compared to those who will end up purchasing a new complete product due to the failure of a non-stick part.

I wonder if there are appliances that don’t come with with non stick coatings, but are made from materials such as stainless steel or cast iron. We have cast iron wok that is quite old but pricey to buy. But it is false economy to buy non stick appliances where coatings just come off imo and bad for the environment

Wait till you try sausages in one

Check out the packets of flavored sodium chloride in the Maggi isle at your supermarket - there are many that are perfect for the air fryer.  Our favourites at the moment are the new chicken shake n bake style mixes. Some are super salty so I usually halve the mixture packet and add stuff from our own herbs n spices drawer.

So well worded, it deserved a quote!

Big fan of the Korean chicken slow cooker version coated and sent to the airfryer instead

100% glass is one way to avoid the coatings. This thing from Kmart at $69 is attractive.

Marketed as a convection oven. 12L, only 1300 Watts. Too big for my liking initially.
