I already had my hot water wired behind a ripple control system, and I assume the smart meter should be smart enough to distinguish between standard and night rate. Flick arranged my smart meter install. I emailed Flick, I'll report back anything interesting I find.

It sounds dumb, but there's a very good chance you'll need to pay for a physical visit for someone to reprogram your meter in order to be metered separately for controlled night and uncontrolled usage (yes you would think network-connected smart meters could be updated remotely...). It may even require a bit of rewiring if you weren't originally wired to have water heating billed separately.

Well we are seriously considering an EV for our next car but how on earth do they know someone has one or not

Prehaps by requiring copy of the registration showing the car details, owner name matching the electricity account, and the address matching the account address or something similar.

It doesn't sound that hard to limit it really.

I'm interested in switching from Powershop to Flick.

I've downloaded all of my half-hourly smart meter data for 2016 and I'm running a back-calculation in Excel to work out what I would have paid for this power had I been with Flick.

I'm located in Christchurch. Can anyone confirm which specific exit node I need to use for the wholesale price component?

Looking at the WITS historic data for final prices I can choose from ISL2201, ISL0331 or ISL0661.

I've guessed ISL2201 so far and on that basis it looks like I would have saved about $300 last year.

Plug your address (or ICP if you have that) into this webpage and it will give you all the registry information about your property. Including the POC (GXP) that you are connected to for reconciliation purposes.

Perfect - thanks a lot. Looks like I should be using ISL0661. Time to re-do the calculations...

Edit: For the record, my results are as follows:

We have a dual meter setup with hot water heating on a controlled meter (only on at night).

Total 2016 usage: 8315 kWh

Powershop actual cost: $1,830, or 22c/kWh

Flick calculated cost (standard user): $1,556 or 18.7c/kWh

Flick calculated cost (low user): $1,493 or $18.0c/kWh

Looks like I'll be changing over...

The price difference between the two should be next to nothing (I'd expect less than few cents) given the node itself is Islington and there is an interconnecting TX between the two pricing points.

It's not really Flick's issue. Their main proposition is passing on the costs and clipping the ticket while still saving you money (generally). Frustration should be aimed at Wellington Electricity.

I can't communicate with WE, just Flick.

Of course you can communicate with WE. They have pricing plans they want the retailer to pass on, undiluted, and this is what Flick does. WE pricing plans are archaic and consumers should be telling them so or they will not change.

This is one of the downsides of having critical infrastructure sold - private companies may be more efficient, but have different drivers than government.

That position seems far too cynical and, in this case, self-defeating. In New Zealand, we seem to be too quick to write off valid and useful options. If we don't make the effort then to tell the people who work for WE then we might have denied them an opportunity to understand and act.

I've met people who work at WE. I was impressed by their passion and efforts to make things better here in Wellington. They never mentioned that the owners control their daily work.

That is rather large. You'd have to wonder if there's some distribution problem specific to the region, or some strange anomaly in the market.
