On my last bill here in Morrinsville  via Mercury

30 days  Power 404 Kw  = $123.87.  Fixed line charge = $10.67 total $134.54

Gas Gas 39  days  = $11.28   Fixed line charge 44.10   Total  $55.38.

Total for power plus gas  = $ 189.92 after discount $175.25

I would never get gas installed in a new house  due to the robbing line charges.  We have a gas central heating and so called instant hot water.

But I have no line charges as I use 45KG bottles, and the local fuel garage that supplies us has no monthly fee at all. i pay $100/45kg's and have two bottles and an auto switch-over setup with free changes/delivery. I LOVE gas instant water and instant heat Hob and would never go back :)

We had two gas bottles at Tauranga for heating in the lounge and they cost a fortune over the winter.  Polled them out and put in a electric  Aircon system.  Way cheaper..

Regards,

Old3eyes

yeah, its not cheap. I get a bit irked at paying $100ish a month for just gas heating. However, if I were to replace it, I would do double glazing before the AC.

Wow. We have an old house in Auckland, two people, also on gas hot water, and usually use around 120 kWh per month.

To answer the original question, the average usage profile for residences in the Wellington region is 7,209 kWh annually (source: emi.ea.govt.nz).

Seasonality for the region is such that if you multiply your April usage by 13.8 it should give you a reasonable indication of your annual usage.

All i can say is when building a new house go as high as you can on insulation within reason... we specced up our insulation 2 grades from standard so that was from memory R2.8 in the walls and 3.6 in the ceiling i think. also the "ribraft" style of concrete floor where the slab sits on polystyrene blocks is great..even in the depths of our Tauranga winter the tile floors dont feel "oh my god" cold. we could have possible gone for some small under floor heating pads in the bathroom and ensuite but thats a luxury

Dunedin 1918 Villa, pink bats in ceiling, underfloor fabric insulation, some double glazing. Gas hobs and on demand hot water. Heat pump

1500units last month at 21c? 1.5MWh

I've lived in cold flats for many years and now earning good money, I will pay to have warm home. Makes me happy.

Hi all,

Interesting topic for me and Jofajafa, who posted before.

As you might (or might not) know, Slingshot has recently started selling power. At this stage to existing customers in Auckland. But we'll be going wider soon - to more regions and to new customers.

Jofajafa is the power product manager at Slingshot Power - and has a heap of stats at his fingertips that he's been crunching, so any questions about usage etc you might have, he could be your man.

And anything you think Slingshot should be doing in this market, we'd be keen to hear.

Cheers! Quentin

Where does one find the energy monitoring boxes that were once called centameters. I have a white ( now yellow ) model that must be around 8/9 years old. It was fairly rudimentary and I thought about looking into a new version after reading the posts here.

However after several google searches and a few expired domain names it would appear they are now called/ owned by owl. Looking at their main webpage they seem to retail in many countries around the globe and the closest is now Oz.

Any recommendations re energy monitoring / recording products ?

Thanks

Ged

We have 60 year old house, extensively renovated entire house 2 years ago when we added 2 new rooms (new cladding, double glazing, insulated walls/ceiling/underfloor, LED lights etc), 2 adults, 2 kids under 5. House is approx 190 sqm.

Mains gas for central heating, hot water and stove top, electricity everything else.
I work from a home office, so plenty of devices on all day (PCs, laptop, NAS, etc)

Last 5 months of usage:

  • Jan: 260 kWh power, 125 kWh gas
  • Feb: 252 kWh power, 147 kWh gas
  • Mar: 298 kWh power, 104 kWh gas
  • Apr: 295 kWh power, 150 kWh gas
  • May: 310 kWh power - no gas read yet

On average our total bill (power + gas) after any discounts is around $140 per month.

Looking at other usage in this thread, I am pretty happy with our usage :)

I checked the ducted heatpump power consumption graphs last night. Last month it consumed 291kWh and this month we're tracking towards 550kWh! May has been much colder than April so I expected an increase, but not quite that much.

It surprises/shocks me that we're using more power just to heat and cool our house than some people use to run the entire household!!!

@wash  How do you manage to track just the ducted heatpump consumption ?  From the energy meters Ive had in the past they clip onto the main lead in the outside box and monitor total consumption. My heatpumps / ducted system isn't plug-in either so gets lumped in with all the other powered on items.

Thanks
