Is this going to be one of those ones where they generate much hype in the hope that some suburb is going to give them some favourable consent or tax break etc to have them in their area?
Sorry but if it isn't open in the next 6 months then this is a joke..
Really we've all be waiting for years and the news is now saying 3-5+ years before their first store can open.
Basic furniture here in NZ is overpriced and doesn't mean EU safety standards for fire retardation so we need real completion asap.

Ikea opening here: NZ debut at Kiwi Property Group site, Auckland's Sylvia Park - NZ Herald
Swedish furniture and homeware giant Ikea is opening at Mt Wellington's Sylvia Park.
Two years after announcing it would open here, it has just announced an agreement to buy land at New Zealand's biggest shopping centre, owned by NZX-listed Kiwi Property Group at Mt Wellington, Auckland.

Oh dear. The traffic will be a nightmare. I believe last time they looked at Sylvia Park they were requested to fund a dedicated motorway exit.

Sylvia Park is the most ridiculous place for an IKEA. I've been to IKEA shops all over the world. They are always located on the fringe of cities. They are destination stores, people travel across cities (and from other towns) to go there.
From RNZ
The conditional agreement is for IKEA to buy 3.2 hectares on the eastern side of the Sylvia Park shopping mall.
So this would be between the railway line and Carbine Road.

I guess it has to be there. Looks like a few buildings will have to be demolished to make way for it. An Ikea won't be small. They will need more carparks too.
Mt Wellington sounds like a horrific concept...
Avoid.
That’s a shame. I thought the original site was at Westgate, which would have meant one trip with a trailer to both Costco and IKEA.
Having visited IKEA in Australia, unless you are into Swedish Meatballs, you are probably only an occasional shopper so an expedition to Sylvia Park isn’t the end of the world.

I wonder how long it will be before we have those laws in NZ for fire retardation. Much of the new furniture you can buy in NZ is poorly made disposable stuff. Don't think many people would get it recovered either, like you would with older high quality furniture.

Kiwi Property has secured an agreement to acquire a 3.2 hectare property at 79 Carbine Road and 10 Clemow Drive in Mt Wellington, Auckland for $27.1 million.
Chief Executive, Chris Gudgeon, said: “When combined with our existing landholdings on Carbine Road and Clemow Drive, this acquisition enables us to consolidate a strategic 7.7 hectare landholding with a road bridge connection to Sylvia Park over the railway line.”
“We have no immediate plans to redevelop the land; however, given our world-class town centre vision for Sylvia Park and Mt Wellington’s status as a Metropolitan Centre, it makes good sense for us as a long-term investor to increase our landholdings in this strategic location. Kiwi Property’s landholdings in Mt Wellington now total over 30 hectares, including the main 20.4 hectare Sylvia Park Shopping Centre site.”
Improvements on the property comprise a cool store, industrial buildings, a truck fuel stop and temporary structures for office and storage. The property is leased to eight tenants, including Fonterra and VINZ, with current passing income of ~$1 million per annum and a weighted average lease term of 4.77 years.
The acquisition will be funded from existing debt facilities and is due to settle on 13 October 2017.
Kiwi Property currently has three expansion projects underway at Sylvia Park Shopping Centre, including a new dining lane, office building and multi-level carpark. A fourth development project, comprising a retail galleria expansion and carpark, is in an advanced planning stage.

The ones in OZ are not on the fringes,
Melbourne's Richmond Ikea is part of a mall and easily accessible on the tram from Downtown
Sydney's Tempe Store is just behind the airport, so pretty much hemmed in with suburbs....
Having one at Mt Wellington fits pretty much with this model of being near transit lines and near industrial zones...
Has there been any talk of putting the railway line + station in a cut/cover tunnel and expand the mall east? Would make it more easier practical to get to Ikea from the mall
And for us pleebs that don't live in Auckland: Looking forward to NZ getting online shopping directly with IKEA, the prices that importers charge are just ridiculous.
Looking forward to be shopping (online) for all kinds of stuff directly from IKEA New Zealand.
