have you got the model numbers? i can't find a 7.8kw fujitsu.

My apologies, quite right, go by the heating. 8kw and 3kw models. The astg ones. They are the same model I went to each installer, and they are plentiful in availability, and they are good quality for the price paid.

My electrician did my last heat pump install. It turned out at about $3,000 for the Daikin second smallest Cora unit. That included extra copper pipe, maybe 8 - 10m.

I could find the model number in a day or so, to find to cost of the unit. From memory 2.5kw or slightly larger.

You paid $3k to install a singular feed  pump? Or was this a base unit for multi feed? Cheers

I think it was $3k for this unit below, installed. Might have been a little bit less. I got two quotes, the other was a bit more. The outdoor unit is quite a way from the indoor unit, up the side of the house, through the ceiling about 6-8m, back outside again, into the office through the wall. Included running a new circuit from the switchboard about 20m away. From memory it took two installers about 5h. So the install will have been around $1500 Inc gst. Back to back would be cheaper.

ok, so basically about $1400 for the small one and $2600 for the large reasonable retail price. that leaves $2500 for install. for me that kinda high but what needs to be done is a big question mark.

$1100 for small one, $2400 for big one. Current retail price.

So its $3000 for install, thats why I thought it seemed a bit high?

So I checked with a couple of others, one responded so far. His installation costs all up are $5200 vs $6600 (I thought was $6500 but is 6600 upon checking) for the guy who seems professional but wont break his costs down for product and labour, just lists an installed price.

Is $1400 worth getting concerned about? Money is tight, but we still have plenty of liquid equity. The small unit is for a bedroom and a little less straight forward but installed directly below and comes up inside a closet just the same as an external one. There are no extra kinks. It is a bit of working on your knees etc, but Im not sure thats where $1400 is justified.....

It's almost all about the lineset route and the location/access to the outdoor. Indoors are almost always trivial unless it's a cassette or ducted

Yep, thats why I found through the first lot being salesmen not techs it pays to have a qualified Tech do your quote. One person on here even got a detailed design, which personally I assumed was part of the service, otherwise how do you avoid arguing after what was agreed......

Either way it was much more helpful. So far it appears costly, but I think we will go with them regardless.

i think your retail prices are a bit low. tradies don't always get the same deals the retailer buying groups do.

yep i know, but these prices are from tradies.

I wonder if the retail market has created a false sense of expectation for price.

I forgot to update.

We had one guy come out who is an installer himself and owns the company. He seemed really switched on. He had an idea where to place the small bedroom unit so you do not see the pump outside, with the pipes popping up in our study bedroom, so that they can can install the bedroom high wall unit on the opposite side in the middle of the only flat wall above the middle of the bed.

One problem, he wants to put in a Fujitsu 2.5kw for the same price others will do the 3.5kw comfort range.

also, the 8kw unit in the kitchen is a simple replace the existing failed Mitsubishi. The wiring is all there, the holes are all there etc. He costs $600 more than two other quotes.

Am I being too stingy not knowing why it costs $600 more and why the bedroom unit is the smallest unit for the same price as a 3.5kw system?

On another note, I found a website that shows how to test if its the R32 inverter capacitor. I just a bit scared cat with electrical stuff.  Troubleshoot Your Loud Heat Pump: 9 Possible Causes and Solutions (temperaturemaster.com)

Not on person has suggested try to fix it, they all say it will cost too much, even though it could just be the capacitor. They all ask how old it is and say oh no, passed ten years its passed its time. But thing is, its only been in use for 3 years during summer on the reallt hot/humid days. Prior owners didnt use it, I believe them as we know them, they had no reason to lie as I asked well before it broke down.

variables (inverter) don't use start/run capacitors. just be wary of usa sites because a lot of theirs is old tech. they do not have r32 units. they tend to be big on single and dual stage units.

i highly recommend under sizing the bedroom unit. get the slowest speed fan you can so its quiet.

That's a) a fairly terrible article, and b) not referring to the kind of units you see here.

It's talking about the motor start capacitor found in the single phase single stage units found in the US.

Inverter units fundamentally don't have a start capacitor, because they don't have single phase motors that need one. They use three-phase motors fed by an inverter (single phase AC > DC > three phase variable frequency AC).
